McNamee pounces as Harps beat Shels
An 87th minute Barry McNamee strike won Finn Harps a vital 1-0 victory over Shelbourne at Finn Park this evening.
Harps had a goal disallowed in the second-half but McNamee's late strike sealed Harps' second victory over Shels this season along with some vital points.
The home team played the better football in the opening-half in unusually fine conditions at a bright Ballybofey and the better chances fell to them.
Striker Filip Mihaljevic availed of some pinpoint passing from his midfielders and had opportunities in which to open the scoring.
The best came in the first minute, but the Croatian headed wide while he was unable to get around Shels defender Jonathan Ross Wilson to shoot in another big opportunity 20 minutes later.
The forward was rewarded for his good movement with two more half-chances in the closing minutes of the half but just couldn't keep the ball away from the visitors' hungry backline to have a clear shot on goal.
Shelbourne opted for a direct approach and they too had some good chances in the opposition area, none more so than when Aodh Dervin's volley attempt which he powered over goal in the 10th minute.
Shane Farrell looked to be in shortly after but was denied possession just in time by a defender.Harps' Jesse Devers had an attempt very similar to Dervin's after a great lay off by Yo-Yo Mahdy on 24 minutes but, just like his opponent, he blazed over in what was perhaps the biggest chance of the half.
Play became more fluid in the second-half as the teams went in search of that crucial winner, and hard challenges were doled out by both sides, showing the importance of the fixture.
A big moment came in the 64th minute after Devers, a bright spark at right full-back for the Ballybofey men, won a foul off his opposite number on the right flank.
A scramble ensued in the box upon the arrival of Regan Donelon's delivery and, assisted by a number of teammates, Yousef Mahdy bundled the ball into the Shels net in what appeared to be the games opener.
Celebrations were curtailed however, and a free-out awarded for an apparent offside call from the linesman, so the game stood at 1-0.
The sides continued to attack each other, and forward subs were made from both benches while Elie-Gael N'Zeyi picked up an unfortunate injury on 80 minutes for Harps and had to be stretchered off to force another change from an already depleted squad.
The Donegal side continued to have the better of it though, and the vital moment came from winning a corner in the 87th minute.
Donelon delivered and it was deflected out to Luke Rudden, who, instead of shooting, cleverly stepped over the ball to leave it to captain Barry McNamee, who shot low to the right past numerous bodies in the visitors box to make it 1-0 to Harps.
Stanley Anebonam combined with fellow Shels sub JJ Lunney in the dying moments of the game but he couldn't direct Lunney's cross toward goal, leaving Damian Duff's Dubliners to fall to a second defeat to Harps, who now move to within 2 points of their opponents in the Premier Division.
