Harps edge win over Shels in Tolka Park
Finn Harps will head back to Donegal happy tonight, edging the win and the three points in the Premier Division over Shelbourne at Tolka Park.
Ethan Boyle, Conor Tourish and Eric McWoods supplied the goals for the 3-0 triumph, in what is Harps’ first win of the 2022 season.
After hitting the crossbar on two occasions earlier in the first half, Ollie Horgan’s men took the lead in the 44th minute when Ethan Boyle’s strike surpassed Lewis Webb to stretch the away side 1-0 ahead just before the break.
A double blow was then inflicted on The Reds as JR Wilson, who got injured in the process of defending the goal had to be taken off the field on a stretcher. He was replaced by Shane Farrell while the scoreline remained as such come the halftime whistle.
Discipline slipped in the second half as tensions were on the rise, Luke Byrne, Dave Webster, Ryan Connolly and manager Horgan were all booked.
Damien Duff’s outfit had some slightly more progressive play in this passage, albeit the next goal was still to appear for the opposition. It came in the 62 minute when defender Tourish got a last flick onto a nice Harps move, marking his first goal for the club.
Shels kept pushing for a comeback and with their few half chances were probably the better group in the second half, although they couldn’t get the goal to surface. One did however for McWoods and the away unit, rounding off a convincing performance with their third goal of the evening.
Next up Harps host Shamrock Rovers in Finn Park after the break on the 1st of April, while Shelbourne travel to The Showgrounds to play in form Sligo Rovers in hopes of a more positive display.

He was also full of praise for his opposite number and commented that “Ollie is an expert after all these years and the Club is an expert in what it has been doing the past few seasons. You could argue we’re favourites going into the game tomorrow but absolutely not they could very much be."
Speaking ahead of the game Shels manager Damien Duff has said that today's game is “bigger than Bohs last Monday”
Speaking to Ciaran Callan on the FinalWhistle.ie League of Ireland Podcast Shelbourne captain Luke Byrne was assured to no one ever gets an “easy game” against Finn Harps. “They’re established now in the league for a few years and they’ll come down I’m sure targeting this game to pick up three points” he said. “Ollie Horgan is a top manager and he’s done an amazing job at Finn Harps. Every year they seem to have to do some sort of rebuild but he always gets results and it’s a credit to him and his players.” “All of the games ask different questions of you but you know we’ll do our homework on them, particularly the new players who we might not be so familiar with, and we’ll have a game plan out and we’ll certainly be going out to win it.”
Boyd, Mark Coyle and Dan Hawkins have been the ones to watch so far for Damien Duff’s side, while Ryan Connolly and Rudden are key players for Harps.
Harps on the other hand travelled to The Showgrounds in Sligo where a 3-1 loss was inflicted upon them. There Aidan Keena had a hattrick wrapped up for The Bit O’Red by the 47 minute and a Luke Rudden consolation goal wasn’t enough to mount a comeback for the Donegal men.
The last time the pair met they shared the spoils as they played out a 1-1 draw where Ciaran Kilduff and Barry McNamee were on the scoresheet. The Reds are coming off the back of an identical result in the Dublin derby versus Bohemians recently, where Seán Boyd hit the back of the net after only being on the pitch for under a minute only for it to be cancelled out by Grant Horton late on.
