Match Report

Waterford turn on the magic to defeat Treaty

A dominant display from the hosts in the RSC saw Waterford beat Treaty United to keep hold of second place in the First Division for now.

The game was lively right from the off. Waterford looked to go down the right side from the off but quickly switched to utilizing Darragh Power and Phoenix Patterson down the left-hand side. It wouldn’t take long for this to prevail.

It took just ten minutes for the opening goal of the match. Junior Quitirna struck home off his right foot from 25 yards out after some good build-up play from Patterson and Idowu. Junior had all the time in the world and did well to find the side netting of the bottom right corner past Conor Winn.

Waterford looked lively and were the most likely to get a second from here. Idowu, Patterson, and Power all having efforts on goal but with just the one goal lead coming up to the half-hour mark.

The away side struggled to get in-form striker Enda Curran into the game, and on the few occasions, he did pick up possession early on, was surrounded by a well-organised Blues backline and could not make anything of it.

Raul Uche thought he had the Blues two up just after the half-hour mark after poking home from a mistake from keeper Conor Winn who failed to handle Darragh Power’s effort, but the linesman had other ideas as the goal was ruled out for offside.

Treaty were second best all throughout the half and would’ve been hoping to get in at the break just one behind, but in the 41st minute, the hosts had other ideas.

Tunmise Sobowale played a delightful ball in from the right-hand side and found an unmarked Raul Uche who smashed home from close range to give Waterford a deserved 2-0 lead and that was how it remained in the few mins before the end of the first half.

Treaty United took off Enda Curran at the break, with one eye if not both already on the Cup Semi-Final against Derry next weekend.

Waterford made it three just before the hour mark. Junior Quitirna came in off the left with some great dribbling past players, and when it looked like he was crowded out, pulled off a la croqueta pass to Idowu who had all the time to slot Patterson in from the left and made no mistake finding the bottom left corner. A goal that very much typified the Waterford performance tonight.

Both teams ran the benches in the final parts of the game as the intensity for both teams dropped knowing that big Cup games await next weekend for both these sides.

Blues owner Andy Pilley will have been delighted to witness his new acquisition performing like this in person as things are looking very good for Waterford who take a stranglehold on second place and can now look forward to hosting Shels next weekend.

The result from Turner's Cross does however confirm that Treaty United have secured 5th spot in the league and will be in the playoffs. A small consolation to take from a disappointing night.
