Match Report

Galway United lose ground on title away to Treaty

Stephen Walsh’s 80th-minute penalty wasn't enough as Treaty United held on to a 1-1 draw.

Enda Curran 18th goal of the season in the 10th minute opened the scoring for the home side.

Galway fought for the entirety of the match but lacked that attacking edge Walsh tucked away the penalty in cool fashion under pressure but the lack of a Galway win sees Cork City have one hand on the title.

It was a quiet opening 10 minutes in the Markets field Galway had most of the possession but failed to create any chances of note during their early spell.

It was Treaty who struck first with 11 minutes on the clock a long throw-in from Marc Ludden landed at the feet of Enda Curran who from 12 yards out cooley and calmly struck it home to continue his fine scoring form his 18th goal this season.

The home side seemed happy with taking the early lead and allowed Galway to keep possession and tried hitting them on the break.

All this possession and play and Galway still failed to test Jack Brady in the Treaty net.

It was Treaty who tested the Galway keeper after 28 minutes a free kick at the edge of the area was well saved by Conor Kearns as he kept his side in what was a disappointing half for his side.

It was Conor Kearns who was tested again early in the second half after 47 minutes he was forced to keep Conor Melody's effort from extending his side's lead to 2-0.

Treaty kept Galway pinned back for the opening period of the second half but Galway soon grew into the second half knowing that anything less than a win would see their title chance crumble.

60 minutes on the clock and Galway had Treaty on the ropes but again no major chances Ronan Manning was a bright spark for the away side but no effort to test Treaty.

Galway pushing for an equaliser never seemed to create a golden opportunity. In the 80th minute Wilson Waweru was brought down in the box a soft penalty it seemed but the Tribesmens didn't care as Stephen Walsh stepped up and slotted it home 1-1 with 10 minutes remaining.

The home side retreated after this point and played out for the draw and like for the most part of the night defended the box well and launched counter attacks from deep and saw out a draw an important point for Treaty which helps their promotion push but two points lost for Galway in their chase for the title.
