Match Report

Treaty limp to draw against 10-man Cobh

Despite a purposeful start, Treaty United were their own worst enemy as they limped to a 2-2 draw against ten-man Cobh Ramblers at the Markets Field in the First Division tonight.

The result means Tommy Barrett's men are now winless in their last seven matches across all competitions, despite taking the lead in three of those.

Dean George and Matt Keane both missed chances early on here, before Marc Ludden opened the scoring from the spot after six minutes as Harlain Mbayo was punished for an inadvertent handball.

Even though they were firmly in the ascendancy, the hosts conceded a remarkable own goal 10 minutes later as Joe Gorman's overhit back pass caught goalkeeper Jack Brady unaware and agonisingly trickled in at his near post, despite the 25-year-old's best efforts to claw it off the line.

Witnessing that freak own goal seemed to energise Darren Murphy's men, as James O'Leary in particular was a lively nuisance down the flank as Treaty were forced to make multiple defensive interventions to keep their visitors at bay.

Brady made a fantastic one-on-one stop to thwart Danny O'Connell on the stroke of half-time, while Jason Abbott's inswinging corner delivery hit the woodwork minutes later.

This week, Rams' boss Murphy stressed his belief it was only a matter of time before results started to swing in their favour. To start the second-half, it looked like this would be their moment.

Treaty were sucker punched from a poorly defended Pierce Phillips free-kick with players caught ball-watching everywhere, with the centre-back heading home from close-range.

O'Connell, who couldn't believe he missed the aforementioned opportunity, turned creator to feed an unmarked Brendan Frahill. But just as soon as they were wheeling away to celebrate their turnaround, Mbayo was being read the riot act from his head coach on the touchline.

He meant well but made a mess of his attempt to shield a loose ball back to goalkeeper Sean Barron in the box, with an onrushing Joe Collins being subsequently clattered into as he too made chase.

The referee hesitated before pointing to the spot, such was the contentious nature of this impending decision, and Ludden again sent Barron the wrong way from twelve yards.

Cobh were still creating chances and could've retaken the lead nine minutes later after another well-worked passing sequence, but Luke Desmond saw his well-hit effort cannon off the woodwork. Brady was rooted to the spot and this felt like another timely warning for the hosts not to ease up.

Then, they had a numerical advantage to work with for the final 20 minutes plus stoppage-time as Ramblers fullback Darragh O'Sullivan was shown a straight red for cynically impeding Matt Keane on the edge of the box with a tug as he advanced goalwards.

It felt harsh but he was the last man and you could sense Cobh would have to suffer if they were to snatch a point in the end. Pinned back in their own half and continuously pressured by constant waves of Treaty attacks, Barron made a big stop to thwart Collins' well-executed half-volley.

The hosts threatened and didn't stop trying, but ultimately couldn't find the winner they would've felt justified their play.

A pair of penalties could've settled it, but instead a freak own goal and defensive breakdown means they're forced to share the spoils again. Taking everything into consideration, that point will feel like all three for the visitors. Could this be the start of their climb up the standings?

Full-time! Treaty 2-2 Cobh Ramblers: After four minutes of stoppage-time, Treaty threatened but couldn't find the winner they were longing for. A pair of penalties could've settled it, but a freak OG and defensive breakdown early in the second-half saw them share the spoils once more. All things considered, that'll feel like a win for the visitors.

  • 84'

BIG SAVE BARRON! He reacts well and gets down low to thwart Joe Collins' well-executed half-volley, as a lofted ball into the box was partially cleared...

  • 82'

Stoppage in play for two Cobh knocks as the physio enters the fray... another sub in the meantime: McGrath on for O'Leary.

  • 77'

Abbott is booked for cynically kicking the ball away, as you feel Cobh will have to suffer if they're to snatch a point from this matchup now - being pinned back and have a numerical disadvantage too.

  • 73'

Double substitution time for the visitors: Walsh and Beineon are introduced, on in place of Larkin and Phillips.

  • 67'

For what it\'s worth, I think a straight red there is harsh by the ref but understandable - he was the last man, despite trying to play the ball, he didn\'t time his challenge well and it\'s being described as a professional foul.

  • 66'

SENDING OFF! Cobh Ramblers' fullback Darragh O'Sullivan is shown a straight red card, after impeding a goalscoring opportunity on the edge of the box!

  • 62'

Off the bar! Cobh pass the ball forward and create a well-worked move of their own, before Luke Desmond sees his well-hit effort cannon back off the woodwork. Brady was beaten there..

  • 61'

Michael McCarthy produces an inch-perfect last-ditch tackle to deny Melody, who drove dangerously into the box from the flank and wins a corner... nothing comes of it, as Barron can soak up the pressure.

  • 56'

Then, Mbayo makes a mess of his attempt to shield the ball back to his 'keeper in the box. An onrushing Collins is clattered into, the referee points to the spot, and we're level once more.

  • 55'

Remarkable few minutes have unfolded here, Treaty were sucker punched from a poorly defended set-piece with defenders ball-watching everywhere. Frahill couldn't believe his luck and wasn't going to miss from close-range.

  • 53'

GOAL, INSTANT REPLY! LUDDEN AGAIN FROM THE SPOT!

  • 51'

COBH AHEAD, through FRAHILL! 2-1 to the visitors, from a poorly defended free-kick!

  • 49'

First booking of the evening is brandished to Dean George, who cynically pulled back an opponent player right in the referee's eyeline after losing possession. Not his wisest decision.

  • 47'

Another promising Treaty attack is killed in its tracks, this time Guerins volleys wide of the mark after another good Keane pass!

  • 46'

Second-half underway, no changes made by either manager at the break. Will this be another draw?

  • 45'

Half-time! The clock ticks over to 45 and referee Declan Toland doesn't add any stoppage-time. Treaty 1-1 Cobh Ramblers, and the scoreline doesn't do this affair any justice. The hosts were firmly in the ascendancy, for all of 15 minutes, now they're having to fight harder to regain their lead... shares spoiled so far.

  • 44'

Off the crossbar! Jason Abbott's inswinging corner delivery curls past unsuspecting heads, hits the woodwork and trickles out for a goal-kick.

  • 40'

You could almost hear it in the commentator's voice, resigned to a 2-1 deficit heading into the break. Brady, who was helpless for that own goal earlier, produced a big diving stop to his left there.

  • 39'

What a save by Jack Brady! After a well-worked transition move which splits the Treaty backline in half, with deft build-up play and a neat Jack Larkin backheel to tee him up, Danny O'Connell cannot believe he's missed!

  • 34'

Close! All of Treaty's chances seem to go through Matt Keane, who combines with George and Conor Melody before the latter lets fly... it flashes narrowly wide of Sean Barron's far post, but not by much.

  • 30'

Per my SofaScore app, Cobh have had 66% possession so far through half-an-hour of play here. Considering how slowly they started, the phrase "tide has turned" is accurate, although Treaty have settled these last five minutes.

  • 21'

Before the freak OG, I was going to highlight James O\'Leary being a lively nuisance for Treaty to defend against down the left-hand side... This game has been flipped on its head without warning and energised by a free goal, the Rams suddenly fancy this now.

  • 17'

OG is credited to Joe Gorman, who overhit his attempted backpass and didn\'t spot goalkeeper Jack Brady off his line -- not expecting the ball back in mid-air -- and despite his best efforts, can\'t stop it trickling in, as he crashes against his near post frantically trying to scramble. Just like that, Cobh are level.

  • 16'

OUT OF NOTHING, COBH RAMBLERS EQUALISE! Remarkable own goal.

  • 12'

Dean George tracking back in his own half, then centre-back Sean Guerins, make important headed interventions for the hosts to snuff out Cobh's aerial half-chances.

  • 8'

Collins pinches the ball in midfield as Cobh cheaply relinquish possession, but his effort from distance was underwhelming after a promising run-up, whistling wide. Treaty are dominating early on.

  • 6'

GOAL! Marc Ludden breaks the deadlock from the penalty spot! Lee Devitt's effort struck an unsuspecting Harlain Mbayo in the box, the referee didn't hesitate and neither did Ludden - sending Barron the wrong way. 1-0 Treaty.

  • 3'

Promising start from the hosts, with another good chance going begging... this time Sean Guerins' cross is perfectly-weighted for an unmarked Matt Keane in the area, but he flicks his eventual effort over the crossbar.

  • 1'

We're off! Treaty kicking from left-to-right and immediately concede a free-kick in a dangerous position, it's cleared and they advance in numbers on the counter... but Dean George, with the goal at his mercy, taps an effort towards the far post... it trickles past the mark!

  • The two teams are out and we're closing in on kick-off now... Treaty will be favoured, but given their defensive deficiencies, that means nothing...

  • Joel Coustrain, who I praised in my pre-match preview for his impactful cameo last time out, is among the notable absences. Considering both have been struggling to score regularly, who will step up tonight?

  • ... Tommy Barrett makes no changes to the side who drew 0-0 at home with Longford on Monday, with Mark Walsh and Scott Kirkland both recalled to the hosts' matchday squad.

  • With a sunny evening awaiting the players at the Markets Field tonight, some interesting team news emerging for the hosts now...

  • Some encouraging news for tonight's visitors: top goalscorer Beineon O'Brien Whitmarsh is back in the matchday squad, having missed their 4-2 defeat by Waterford this time last week. He's named among a strong bench.

  • Without further ado, the Cobh Ramblers team news is in... click on the line-ups tab to see which eleven Darren Murphy has opted for tonight!

  • Good evening and welcome to tonight\'s live commentary, as Treaty United again search for a much-needed win to snap their winless rut vs. similarly struggling Cobh Ramblers tonight with KO less than an hour away now! My name\'s Mosope Ominiyi, I\'ll take you through the night\'s play-by-play action as it unfolds from Markets Field.
