Gilchrist powers Cork to win in Waterford
Ally Gilchrist powered Cork to a 2-1 victory over Waterford with his second-half header at the RSC to give City breathing room at the top of the SSE Airtricity First Division.
Despite good Waterford play early in the game, Cork took the lead through a Matt Healy volley in the ninth minute.
Phoenix Patterson got the Blues back level with his second-half strike but Cork returned a goal soon after when Gilchrist headed home from a Healy corner.
It was Waterford that had the early chances, with Roland Idowu causing trouble for Cork down the right flank.
Idowu replaced the injured Junior Quitirna in the Blues lineup and his excellent delivery into the Cork area was headed off the crossbar by striker Louis Britton in the first minute.
Another great cross by the former Southampton player was defended outward and Shane Griffin's effort from distance was saved while a similar chance went abegging moments later.
Though the home team looked dangerous in attack, it was a different story at the back and totally against the run of play, Cork scored front their first serious foray forward.
A drive down the left saw Cork send the ball across the Deise goal and Matt Healy volleyed it home for the visitors to take the lead to the delight of their vocal travelling support.
City dominated play after scoring and more chances followed.
Ruairi Keating could have done better with his touch in front of goal on 15 minutes while Eddie Nolan was forced to stop Matt Srbely's shot from crossing the goal line seven minutes later.
The game lived up to its Munster Derby billing as four players received bookings in the first half, the game becoming scrappy and inhibiting Waterford from equalising as they struggled to create opportunities.
The home side sparked back into life in the closing stages of the half as Yassine En-Neyeh appeared to be taken out of it inside the visitor's box but referee Gavin Colfer waved play on.
Waterford came close after with a Louis Britton strike saved by Cork's David Harrington but went into the break a goal down.
The Blues continued to play more pace in the second-half and layed siege to the Rebels' area in its opening stages.
Phoenix Patterson upped his contribution for Waterford and led the Deise forward from the left as he combined well with fullback Richard Taylor.
The Scot was rewarded for a couple of unsuccessful efforts on goal when he got the ball on the edge of the Cork box in the 58th minute and his shot took a fortunate deflection to nestle find the right corner of the Cork goal.
Waterford didn't last long on equal terms however.
Cork began attacking again upon conceding and soon after a Matt Healy corner found City's own Scottish player, Ally Gilchrist, who powered home his header to give the Rebels the lead again.
The visitors then closed shop and the Blues struggled to gain ground even as Cian Kavanagh came on to join Louis Britton up front.
Patterson and Idowu delivered teasing crosses into the danger zone in the final moments but the Cork defence held out for victory to extend their lead at the top of the First Division by three points.
