Match Report

Bray and Wexford share the spoils

Neither side were able to find the back of the net at the Carlisle Grounds where Bray Wanderers and Wexford Youths played out a 0-0 draw in the League of Ireland First Division.

Both sides remain level on points in the table after six games this campaign.

It was a game of football with very little clear-cut chances for either side during the first 45 minutes of football.

Harry Groome looked like a real bright side for Ian Ryan’s side early on and his link up with striker Conor Davis always kept the Bray defence on high alert.

The Wexford duo almost combined after a quarter of an hour on the clock, but Bray’s Daniel Blackbyrne was on his toes to put an end to the attack.

Conor Davis’ free kick was the game’s first shot on target ,through a free kick from the guts of 25 yards out. Stephen McGuinness was equal to his strike.

Kurtis Byrne found himself with the half’s best chance when Darragh Levingston’s cross found the Bray man in space at the back post. Sadly, for the home faithful, Byrne’s effort was straight down the throat of Paul Hunt.

On the half hour mark, skipper Hugh Douglas was next to go close for the Seagulls after he had a free header from a corner from Paul Fox.

Rob Manley was in lively form for Bray, and he showed great speed and determination to get on the end of Daniel Blackbyrne’s long ball forward. Manley then dribbled around Wexford goalkeeper Paul Hunt before the keeper fouled Manley just outside the area.

Referee Mark Moynihan chose not to book Hunt for the challenge and the sides went in level at the break.

Bray had the first big chance of the second period when Jack Hudson’s long ball found the electric Callum Thompson. The tricky winger danced through tackles before rounding Paul Hunt.

Sadly, for Pat Devlin’s side, his effort from a difficult angle ended up in the side netting.

It was a similar case to the first half with neither side able to create chances on a frequent basis.

With just over 10 minutes remaining, Paul Hunt was called back into action for the visitors, this time to deny a Rob Manley header.

In the final few minutes, there were a couple of half chances for both teams with Karl Manahan and Evan Farrell both trying their luck from distance but neither troubled the respective keepers.

Kurtis Byrne came very close to winning it with the final kick of the game but his excellent run and left footed shot bounced off the post and out.

  • 54'

Huge chance for the hosts. Callum Thompson turned on the afterburners and raced into Jack Hudson's long ball before taking the ball around Paul Hunt. Thompson released a left footed effort from a difficult angle that ended up in the side netting. Better play from Pat Devlin's side.
