Treaty bag win over 10-man Waterford
Treaty United bagged their second victory of the season following a 2-1 triumph over 10-man Waterford at Markets Field.
Goals from Matt Keane and Enda Curran put Treaty in the driving seat before a nervy finish ensued. Anthony Wordsworth’s 75th minute header gave Waterford hope but the hosts held firm.
Both sides came into the game on the back of a Munster derby loss to Cork City. Waterford, lost their unbeaten run away to City, while Treaty succumbed to a 4-0 reverse to the same opposition just a week ago.
Waterford made four changes from the loss to Cork, 11 days ago. But they were flat out of the traps and failed to get near the level required.
Treaty came into the game short a number of players, due to a bug in the camp. Despite that, one player who was included from the start was Matt Keane. The midfielder played on the right of a flat midfield four and opened the scoring after six minutes.
A low cross from Marc Ludden was flicked by the foot of Enda Curran before Keane powered home from just inside the area.
Waterford owned the football after this, but rarely threatened an equaliser. One opening came when Niall O’Keefe spun and sent a shot goalward only to be denied by the brilliance of Jack Brady, pushing it behind for a corner.
The Markets Field surface continues to frustrate though it did appear improved this week.
Tunmise Sobowale was sent off early in the second half, for a forceful challenge on Curran. Despite winning the ball there was too much force for the liking of Gavin Colfer, who produced the red card.
The attacker doubled the lead soon after, heading home from Charlie Flemings cross.
Wordsworth would fire Waterford a lifeline late on but chances were at a premium, though Brady was able to catch Cian Kavanagh’s header in stoppage time.
Next up for Waterford is a home clash with Longford – one of five league games in April. Treaty look to build on tonight's result when they entertain Athlone Town on April 4th.
