Match Report
Kavanagh points Bray to final
Brandon Kavanagh’s brilliant strike in the first half sealed victory for Bray in the second leg clash against Galway United.
Galway’s attack was no match for Bray’s strong defensive performance.
They sealed their ticket into the playoff final on the back of two clean sheets.
Keeper Brian Maher was the busier of the two keepers but the young man stood strong and had a great individual display.
The opening half started very livelily for both sides. Galway United began red hot piling the pressure on the away outfit.
David Hurley had the first major opportunity of the match after five minutes when Conor O’Keeffe’s cross found Hurley at the back post all alone, but his effort was skied over the bar.
O’Keeffe was involved again from a corner in the ninth minute. His clever back heel effort was stopped on the line by the impressive Maher in nets from the Wicklow side.
The Tribesmen were struck with a sucker punch after dominating the opening exchanges. Bray Wanderers launched a devastating counter-attack with great quick passing and movement saw Kavanagh strike the ball from outside the area into the back of Conor Kearns net. The Seagulls with their first major effort found themselves leading with 21 minutes gone on the clock.
The visitors buffed up their defence after finding the net and saw out their single-goal lead into the break a goal to the good with just 45 minutes separating them from the final.
The second half started much like the first.
The pattern of play was much the same, except now the Wicklow side had a lead and a precious goal to defend.
United applied pressure throughout the entire second half but found that crucial goal impossible to find.
Having little luck from open play a strong away defence left them searching for an answer all night.
Bray managed the game well defending Galway set-pieces brilliantly and Keeper Brian Maher was superb, a calming presence in the back for The Seagulls, he came under immense pressure but never crumbled.
The Seagulls now head into the Playoff finals where they’ll meet UCD.
Unfortunately for the Tribesmen, their campaign is now over not the finish John Caulfield was dreaming of but as the days go by himself and his staff can set their sights on next season.
