Victory Comes At A Price As Wolfhounds Remain Unbeaten In Celtic Challenge

Six tries saw the Wolfhounds go three from three in the Celtic Challenge series, victory however came at a cost as Dannah O'Brien and Linda Djougang were forced off with injury.

Three in each half as Sarah Delaney, Linda Djougang and Sophie Barrett all showing the strength of that dangerous Wolfhounds front tow to add scores in the first half, the Old Belvedere combination off Katie Whelan, Katie Corrigan and Brittany Hogan brought the scores in the second period.

Corrigan showcasing her exploits on her first run out in the competition, worry however for Neil Alcorn will be those injuries to Dannah O’Brien and Djougang, the Wolfhounds back on Irish soil with Kingspan Stadium next on the agenda.

The Wolfhounds did spend the early part of the contest primarily inside their own half as the Glasgow Warriors were utilising a healthy amount of possession, it failed however to materialise any major scoring threat as the game remained in its infancy.

When the Wolfhounds did finally get the chance to attack as Ella Durkan set the charge as the catalyst it almost brought about an early score, Sophie Barrett with a tremendous drive like a hot knife through butter past the Glasgow rearguard, a host of Scottish players had to halt Barrett down shy of the line.

Possession remained with the Wolfhounds on the Warriors 5m line, however as Katie Whelan spun the ball out of the ruck, the pass was knocked on and the Warriors had a chance to breathe. A failed clearance kick restored possession for the Wolfhounds and with some hard yards taken by the Irish forwards they knocked on the door once again.

Shy of the line, the forwards pumped their legs to try power over for the games opening score as we ticked toward the ten minute mark, Glasgow defended  the move well and eventually managed to halt the grounding attempt from Leah Tarpey as the Wolfhounds powered over.

Off the back of a strong lineout on the quarter of an hour mark, Sarah Delaney dotted down the opening score from the rolling maul, O’Brien converted a difficult conversion attempt, for a 7-0 lead. Deserved after how many times they had knocked on the door as their driving maul provided a serious weapon.

One became two shortly after as Linda Djougang doubled the visitors lead after 19 minutes, Katie Whelan controlling the orders from the ruck and passed short for the Old Belvedere prop to pump the legs and get over, O’Brien converted and the lead was 14-0.

Djougang would be forced off with injury a few minutes later and another blow for the Irish contingent saw Dannah O’Brien limp off with a foot injury.  On her Glasgow Warriors debut Phaedra Snailham breathed life into the fixture to cross for Glasgow’s opening try on the half hour mark, Lucy McRae saw her conversion draw wide, for Glasgow the momentum could potentially shift their way after their score.

It however failed to go the way of the hosts playing a first ever meeting at Scotstoun Stadium, a terrific carry from Sophie Barrett saw the Enniskillen RFC, Railway Union RFC and Ulster prop bulldoze through a host of tacklers to dot down the third try. Nikki Caughey assumed the kicking duties for the injured O’Brien and dissected the posts from close range to give the Wolfhounds a 21-5 lead at the break.

With just two minutes gone after the restart Katie Whelan danced past a host of tacklers and raced in for the bonus point try, a first of the Wolfhounds backline as the props had done a lot of the hard work in the opening stanza. Caughey on the mark again for a 28-5 lead.

Just eight short minutes later and the Glasgow Warriors were on the board once again, Louise McMillan got the ball down for Glasgow after sustained pressure along the Wolfhounds line. McRae slotted the extras this time around with a beautiful strike cutting the gap to 16.

The Wolfhounds would see out the game in the final half hour of play, Katie Corrigan on her Celtic Challenge debut finished off a well executed move in the corner, following that Brittany Hogan barged through the Warriors defence and struck the sixth and final try a few short minutes later, Caughey adding the extras for the latter try.
