AIL Roundup: Women’s Division Round 10

With the Division taking a break for two months, UL Bohs remain top unbeaten from nine games after a walkover win in round ten, Railway and belvedere secured big wins to keep on their tails. Elsewhere Cooke secured their first win in the Women’s Division in 22 months.

Galwegians (2T) 10-34 Cooke (5T), Crowley Park

After 1200 minutes of competition in all competitions Cooke secured a win for the first time in 15 games as they overcame Galwegians to open this year’s account.

February of 2022 was the last time Cooke tasted a win in the Women’s Division with a 9th placed play-off win over Malone. They full deserved the win having led 19-10 at the break, they pressed on in the second for the result.

Tries from Stacey Sloan, Niamh Marley, Ilse van Staden, Teah Maguire and Gemma McCamley helped power Cooke to victory, Amanda Morton converted three of their five tries and struck a penalty in the win. Grace Browne Moran and Eve Tarpey added opening half tries for Wegians who fell to a seventh defeat.

Old Belvedere (5T) 37-14 Blackrock College (2T), Ollie Campbell Park

Belvedere made up for their opening round defeat to Blackrock with a dominant showing in their round ten meeting at Ollie Campbell Park.

Jemma Farrell kicked Belvo ahead with a penalty after 13 minutes, four minutes later they added an opening try as Minnona Nunstedt powered over for an 8-0 lead as the conversion missed the mark. Farrell added a second penalty before Emma Tilly went over in the corner in the 34th minute and a superb conversion from Farrell made it 18-0. The lead was 25-0 at the break as Nunstedt carved her way through for a second try, Farrell converting.

Ten minutes into the second half Rock got on the board, Koren Dunne from close range and Ella Durkan added the extras. Belvo replied six minutes later as Elise O’Byrne-White crossed for the bonus point. That went unconverted but three minutes later Farrell was back on the tee as Tilly found space to run in her second of the evening. Aoife Wafer kept up her exploits with the second Rock try after the hour mark. Belvo remain third and look hungry ahead of the second half of the season.

Railway Union (14T) 88-19 Suttonians (3T), Park Avenue

Inspired by hat tricks from Faith Oviawe and Deirdre Roberts, Railway Union ran home one sided victors with a 14 try haul over Dublin neighbours Suttonians.

Railway powered over 52 points in the opening half, a game they needed to win as UL scored a bonus win in a walkover this weekend. Five points separates the two as we head for a two month slumber, Railway finishing the year strong after hitting two roadblocks in recent weeks.

Outside of Oviawe and Roberts hitting three each, Dani Franada, Maddy Aberg, Meabh Keegan and Ailsa Hughes crossed for tries white Rhiann Heery and Aoife Doyle bagged a brace each. Nikki Caughey hit six conversions to tie Kate Flannery on top of the scoring charts with Franada on hand to slot over three. Ciara Spencer, Katelyn Faust and Mary Healy added second half tries for Sutts, Lauren Farrell McCabe with two conversions.

UL Bohemian (4T) 28-0 Wicklow (0T), Annacotty

The match between UL Bohs and Wicklow in Annacotty did not go ahead as Wicklow conceded the game due to injuries. The Robins awarded a 28-0 bonus point win while Wicklow were deducted five points for conceding the fixture.
