Ireland Women move to sixth in world rankings after Japan win

Ireland’s 57-22 test victory over Japan on the weekend lifts them into sixth place in the World Rugby Women’s Rankings.

They were trailing 15-0 but powered back to win comfortably and make it their highest ever tally against the Japanese. The comeback in Shizuoka means Ireland have won all six of their encounters with them to date.

Greg McWilliams’ team finished in impressive style with a 25-point win over a side who had won four of their last five tests before hand. The win earned Ireland 0.41 points on the world rankings and placed them sixth on 76.73, leapfrogging now seventh placed Italy who have 76.69.

Japan are now seven places below them, however their strong form heading into the game had them favoured by many. Winger Natasja Behan made her international debut for the victors and spoke on the win.

“We’re excited to hit the ground running and get a win under our belts. But we had a few errors in the first Test so we need to put in the hard work to fix them and put in another good shift this week, “she told Irish Rugby.

Speaking to the Independent after the game, McWilliams was very proud of his fresh looking side and backed up his decision to put faith in many young players, including six debutants. “These girls are the future of Irish rugby and showed that they belonged on this stage, “said the Ireland manager.

The second test will take place this Saturday at the Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium in Tokyo. The game gets underway at 11am Irish time and will be shown live on TG4.
