Rockwell College Make Quarter Final Stage In Emphatic Fashion

Rockwell College advanced to the Quarter Finals of the Munster Schools Senior Cup, with a six try high scoring display against Bantry.

It was a strong display by the Tipperary side and the first game in the Cup this season to have a clear cut winner by the finish up, they now meet PCB in the Quarter Finals and look a real threat at making the Semi's.

Out-half Kian O'Reilly looked composed from start to finish adding points from the tee as his forwards caused major issues for Bantry also helping themselves to scores, for Bantry it is a tough defeat but they will dust themselves off and regroup.

The sides exchanged early possession but it was Bantry who felt the pressure early on as Rockwell pressed them back inside their 22, several phases past with the Tipperary side getting ever closer, a gap looked open out wide but the Bantry line covered well and stopped the danger, they were rewarded with a penalty to clear their lines.

Bantry found touch but a couple of minutes after found themselves 5-0 down, again Rochwell laid siege after turning over possession, they were within inches of the line as Bantry threw everything to stop them, after a penalty was called with Rockwell opting for a tap and go they stayed on the offensive ad captain Jack Ryan crossed for thee ary try after six minutes, Kian O’Relly saw his conversion just drift right and wide.

Bantry needed a response after going behind, they almost had one in the 12th minute as Dylan Hicks kicked crossfield aiming for Oran Wiseman on the left channel, the pass was excellent but he was tackled and in the end Rockwell cleared after having a scrum and lineout to defend shy of their line.

Rockwell looked potent in attack once they could get phases together and really test out Bantry, another wide move almost brought a score similar to their early move, centre Zac O’Loughlin made a burst and offloaded for winger Sean Leahy but he was tackled into touch by Hicks.

Another lineout did not work their way however as Rock were still pressing and as they inched closer Hicks saw yellow and spent ten minutes on the sideline, while on the field Rockwell added a second try with Ben Everard powering over from close range, O’Reilly added the extras for a 12-0 lead.

Two minutes later it was almost another scoring chance to increase their lead, they looked again to have powered through and touched down but the referee spotted a knock on which overruled the play and gave Bantry time to breathe.

It was a back and forth end to the half despite Rockwell looking dangerous, when Bantry got going in spurts they looked likely too to grab scores, with Ronan O’Connor sent to the bin in added time, this gave Bantry a real chance at points as Hicks lined up the penalty, his effort just went to the left and wide as they went down by the same margin at the interval.

As the second half got underway it looked like Bantry had found the gear to bring them right back into the game, they pressed and looked sharp in attack but were almost undone by a kick in behind, the bounce on the surface was not kind and fell nicely to Rockwell’s O’Loughlin, he went wide and only for a tackle into touch it was going to be a third try for the hosts from Tipp.

Again their lineout was strong as it caused a sure headache for the Bantry side, they worked the phases moving inwards as Bantry shut shop hoping for a turnover, it would not come, the sane move transpired only this time fly-half O’Reilly dotted over in the corner avoiding the tackler, he stepped up to ace the conversion from a difficult angle to out them on the board first in the half, 19 points without reply.

With twenty minutes left Rockwell added the insurance try as Zac O’Loughlin managed to power over spotting a gap in the Bantry defence as the Cashel men really found their mojo in this tie. Minutes before the hour mark they added a fifth as Ryan added a brace with a drive from close range, one from two for O’Reilly off the tee as they were 31-0 clear.

Rockwell look a real force to be reckoned with in the competition after their display in the tie, their lineout is superb and the maul works a treat to drive back an opponent to their line, on the hour mark it pushed Bantry over their line with Conor Bowen touching down for their six try, O’Reilly was putting on a show with another fantastic conversion to make it a 38-0 lead.
