Ireland See Off England For Second Nations Series Win
Ireland have come away with a comprehensive 29-10 win over England in this afternoon’s World Cup warm-up match at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
Both sides are in the process of tuning up their squads as they prepare for the World Cup and both Ireland and England have one more game left against Samoa and Fiji respectively.
Ireland head-coach Andy Farrell will be significantly happier than his English counterpart Steve Borthwick, who will undoubtedly want to see an improved performance next week.
George Ford got his side off the mark with an early penalty but Ireland soon hit back with a try from Bundee Aki to put his side ahead.
Both sides looked nervy in the opening exhanges but it was Ireland who settled into the game more quickly despite showing some uncharacteristic rustiness throughout the first half.
Ireland gradually started going up through the gears and it was a beautiful cross-field kick from Mack Hansen to Garry Ringrose that once again broke the deadlock, with Ringrose skilfully dancing his way inside Steward to force his way over the line and send his side 12-3 ahead at the break.
Ireland were first to score after the break following some good work from the pack - a powerful carry by James Ryan allowed Ross Byrne to spray the ball wide for Lowe who had a lot of time to stroll over in the corner.
Billy Vunipola was handed a yellow card which was eventually upgraded to a red on review as the game entered the final quarter. England seemed to play better with 14 men as they were chasing the game.
It looked like the momentum may shift in England’s direction but minutes later a fantastic pass from Ross Byrne set up Mack Hansen to Ireland’s fourth try and the game was over as a contest.
England battled back into the game with a try from Kyle Sinckler but it was too little too late.
Perhaps the highlight of the game was the introduction of Keith Earls for his hundredth cap for Ireland which gave the atmosphere a lift and minutes later it was a special moment as Earls scored a fantastic try in the corner, complete with a perfect dive in the corner.
Ireland were deserved winners and England never really went up through the gears leaving coach Steve Borthwick to lament that his side had a lot to work on and improve before they play Fiji next week.
