Hat-trick hero Quinn delivers late winner for Crescent College in Munster Cup

Ruadhan Quinn proved the Crescent College Comprehensive hero, as the no. 8 landed a hattrick of second half tries to snatch away victory from Bandon Grammar School.

The winning score came with the game entering stoppage time, after JayC Van Der Westhuizen looked to have given Bandon a surprise victory with fantastic try.

This contest was an arm wrestle in the opening half, with a yellow card shown to Jack O’Regan the only major incident to note. Despite having the extra-player, Comp were stopped short a couple of times, with the Bandon defence showing why they’d reached this stage.

The game exploded into life when a tap penalty five meters saw Quinn crash over. His carrying all day showed why he is highly thought of at schools level.

With Oscar Davey adding the extras, Bandon needed a score and they quickly replied – with Jeff Williams converting a penalty.

While that was a rare attack for Bandon, Comp put themselves in further control when Quinn when over in the opposite corner – finding the whitewash amid a sea of bodies.

But the West Cork school didn’t lie down and a wonderful Crossfield kick inside the 22 caused problems with centre Peter O’Sullivan on hand to make it a one score game again – despite the missed penalty.

Then came the red card. The linesman’s outstretched flag was for a tackled with the shoulder from Adam Murphy, who was dismissed.

Despite this, Bandon piled on the pressure – they were rewarded when Van Der Westhuizen blocked down a routine exit and sprinted over for a try. The extras from Williams made it 12-15.

But Comp, winners most recently in 2014, worked their way up the pitch and forced a knock-on just five meters out. After a handful of patient phases, Quinn made himself the hero with the winning score.

The winners now face PBC later this month, with Thomond Park set to host the latest instalment of this historic competition.
