Clongowes Advance to Leinster Quarter Final On Second Successful Attempt

Clongowes have booked their spot in next Monday's Leinster Schools Quarter Final, after edging past Terenure in a nail biter at Energia Park.

This the second time they have met in the competition after both fielded illegible platers in Clongowes 17-15 win, but this time around the Clane school also claimed victory but not without difficulty.

Tries from Daniel Baugh and Blayze Molloy, combine with successful conversions from Harry Mallon and a penalty o the stroke of half-time, saw them build a 17-0 lead by the break. However Nure replied well as Jim Kennedy, Casper Lorin Gabriel and James McCormack all crossed the whitewash, putting them 19-17 ahead, but the boot of Clongowes scrum-half Tom Murtagh was the difference having struck a penalty late on.

Clongowes had the better of the early possession and forced their way into the Terenure half and put the pressure on early, they tested and asked serious questions of the Nure defence until striking the breakthrough after three minutes, Harry Roche-Nagle made the initial break, he looked for options and chose to kick over the top for left-wing Dan Baugh to win the foot race and ground for the opening try, Harry Mallon converting for the full seven.

It was more of the same after the opening score, Clongowes exerting pressure on Ternure and once again their line would crack, 13 minutes on the clock second row Blayze Molloy powered his way over for their second try, some good work by Tom Murtagh at the back of the ruck to bark orders and keep their forwards moving, but Molloy squeezed through a gap and with Mallon on the mark it was a 14-0 advantage.

Baugh found himself going to the sin bin later in the opening half, but the binning did little to deter Clongowes as they looked not much phased with the numerical disadvantage, Mallon had a penalty that struck the upright, but right as Baugh returned Dermot Collins went to the bin. Terenure failed to capitalise on another Clongowes yellow and their ill discipline allowed Mallon another shot at the posts and he made no error to give them a 17-0 lead at the break.

The break looked to have rejuvenated the Terenure players, giving them a serious morale boost as they came out much the stronger right from the off, Harvey O'Leary started their comeback, from their first real major chance he spot a gap and offloaded to Jim Kennedy to race over their opening try, Louis Moran was summoned for his first conversion and he made no error.

No sooner had the tee made it's way back to the side line, it was needed again, the restart did not travel the ten meters and in the blink of an eye Casper Lorin Gabriel crossed for their second try and Moran converted to leave three between them, the game was back on!

Baugh almost had a chance to end their bit of a rutt in that second half but it came to nothing, Terenure meanwhile had the confidence factor and after a sublime chip over the top by Gabriel, Harvey O'Leary gathered possession and they remained composed to keep the attacking going and with numerous phases they got over through James McCormack, conversion missed but the lead was finally with the Dubliners.

Clongowes forced a penalty after some neat build up play saw Nure again ill disciplined, the kicking duty fell to Tom Murtagh and he dissected the posts for a one point lead, it was a nervy ending in Energia Park, Moran had a penalty that came back off the upright, as they went in search of a late score Clongowes shut shop to seal the win.
