Blackrock College power into semi-finals

Blackrock secured their spot in the semi finals of the Leinster Rugby Schools Senior Cup, after an emphatic 48-0 win over rivals Terenure this afternoon at Energia Park.

Seven tries in the end for a dominant performance by the ranked favourites, after a hard fought opening day performance they dismantled a Terenure side that failed to trouble their defensive line.

The forwards from Blackrock deserve full plaudits as they laid the foundations for their performance, driving Terenure back into their half before the dynamic backline did the damage with their passing, however their forwards also joined in on the scoring.

Blackrock dominated the opening half at Engeria Park, their forwards driving Terenure back into their own half, while their passing and ball work was a joy to watch, a huge blow for Terenure coming just after the opening try as number 8 Ultan Bryne had to be replaced through injury.

The opening try came in the sixth minute for Blackrock, their offence was a weapon and they slowly inched closer to the line and it was the offload by scrum half Oliver Coffey, that found his fullback Ruben Moloney who set the score in motion, he was tackled inches from the line but offloaded to hooker Gus McCarthy who charged his frame over the line to score, Rock with an early 5-0 lead.

After a lovely kick in behind found touch near the Terenure line, Blackrock stole the lineout and began another charge for the try line, after running the phases it was the dangerous centre Luke Kritzinger who managed to power over and touch down for a 10-0 lead by the 12th minute.

Just as the clock ticked past the 15 minute mark, Blackrock had their third try of the afternoon, again it was their pack that did the damage pinning Terenure back into their half, and a terrific run by tighthead prop Paddy McCarthy saw him touch down beside the posts, fly half Zach Quirke getting his first conversion of the afternoon making it 17-0.

The favourites were showing just why they were given that title, as they crossed for a fourth try a minute later, offloading toward the left wing hooker McCarthy took off down the line, he passed inside for Hugh Cooney before he set off down the same line to cross in the corner for a 22-0 lead.

Shortly before the half hour mark Blackrock added their fifth try of the afternoon, another well worked drive, after their maul got set up they ran the phases short of the line, asking a lot of the Terenure defence and eventually Alex Mullan found a gap to score, Quirke was not having the best afternoon from the tee, but another short range kick found its mark, giving them a 29-0 lead, which they took to the break.

Four minutes after the restart Cooney managed to get his second try of the afternoon, again it was their forward line who did the damage to charge for the line, Cooney was on hand to take the pass and drive short to the line, scrum half Oliver Coffey took over the kicking duties and landed his first kick for a 36-0 lead.

Terenure were struggling against the forward line from Blackrock, they were again pinned back to their line and replacement scrum half Will Fitzgerald, performed a pick and go at the back of the maul before crossing to give them a 43-0 lead after 47 minutes.

Terenure remained on the back foot as they could not get any chances toward the opposite line, just after the hour mark Blackrock continued their try scoring exploits as Eoghan Walsh crossed in the corner, the winger in tonnes of space out wide before sprinting for the line unchallenged increasing their lead to 48-0.

A strong showing by Blackrock for the full 70 minutes, a statement of intent that they are here to take home silverware this year in the competition.
