Blackrock College Cruise To Leinster Semi Final Berth

Blackrock College ran in ten tries as they sealed an emphatic win over Cistercian College Roscrea, to book their spot in the last four of the Leinster Senior Cup.

Having built up a 41-7 lead by the break, they never took the foot of the gas and capped off an incredible performance by remaining on the front foot in the second. They will take some beating if anyone aims to take the cup away from Blackrock.

Seven tries in their opening round win and ten this afternoon, Tom O’Riordan and Luke Kritzinger with a brace each, while Charlie Molony, Alex Mullan, Tom Brigg, Derry Moloney, Greg Barron and James O’Sullivan all managing a try each.

Blackrock had the ideal start having notched a try inside the opening minute, Eoghan Walsh started it all off with a terrific turn of pace down the left wing to get yardage, a few phases of solid possession saw Blackrock get closer but the damage came from Prop Tom O’Riordan, he turned on the afterburners and raced through a gap for the opening try, he almost got held just short but used his power to muscle over the whitewash, Oliver Coffey converted for a 7-0 lead.

O’Riordan added a second just four minutes later, the prop linking up with Alex Mullan the tighthead prop with a lovely one handed offload to O’Riordan who broke in for their second try, a beautiful free flowing move and their line used all their skill to create the chance and O’Riordan made a great support run before finishing well, Coffey doubled the advantage off the tee, a dominant opening six minutes.

Roscrea would reply swiftly after going 14-0 down early on, after getting some possession in the Blackrock half, it was their midfield duo that linked up well for their opening try, Sean Finlay at the back of the ruck fed Billy Kelly who carried well under pressure at the Blackrock line he offloaded to James Conroy and his fellow centre made no mistake getting over for the try, Charlie Naughton made the conversion and it was game back on.

Having their lead cut in half, Blackrock mounted a counter charge, some ill discipline by Roscrea allowed Coffey a shot at goal, which he made no mistake in landing the long range penalty, minutes later James O’Sullivan made a great carry inside the Roscrea half, his dancing feet too difficult to contain and his pace saw him bearing down on goal, he offloaded to Luke Kritzinger, he had options in support but with unlimited space in front of him he ran in their third try for a 22-7 lead.

The Rock attack looked menacing, just two minutes after Kritzinger had gotten over, they would land a fourth try as Mullan got his score after doing so well in the build up for O’Riordan’s second try, he broke in on the far right corner and dotted down, Coffey kicked a sensational touchline conversion to put the defending champions ahead 29-7.

It was an end to end start to the tie as not much else had happened despite the scores, Roscrea forced a great turnover to prevent Blackrock piercing their line once more, however their electrifying pace in attack was causing Roscrea a headache, Walsh again starting a move off with a terrific run down the wing, using their possession they carved an opening and out wide on the right channel, Kritzinger gathered and raced in for their fifth try, he had time to dot near the posts which gave Coffey a tap over conversion for a 36-7 lead.

Roscrea had their backs to the ball against an unrelenting Blackrock attack, they coughed over possession towards the end of the opening half from their lineout, fast hands and quick movement had Rock on the counter, Charlie Molony made a drive down the left wing but was tackled well, however Tom Brigg was there to swallow up the possession and drove over for their sixth try, conversion unsuccessful in the last act of the half, with Blackrock ahead 41-7.

Coffey added another monster of a score to start the second half on a positive note for Blackrock, the scrum-half an incredible goal kicker and well able to strike 40m+ kicks, it would take a huge turnover from Caleb Schofield to prevent Blackrock getting a further try not long after the penalty, Molony with a great drive in the build up but it looked like O’Riordan was in for his hat trick but Rory Doody tackled him well, before Schofield did enough to force a turnover.

Molony would get his try in the 55th minute and it was well worth the wait, a free flowing move down the left wing and the full-back executed a great chip and chase to create room to race in for the seventh try, Coffey had another difficult kick but he split the posts for a 51-7 lead.

Rock emptied their bench and kept on the attack, Roscrea were doing well to keep them out but after 64 minutes their defence was breached again, substitute Derry Moloney making good of possession on the left wing before getting over for their eight try, another substitute Harry Whelan the vice captain, took up the kicking duties and his first strike was accurate, Rock ahead 58-7.

Greg Barron helped himself to a try in the dying minutes as Blackrock looked to finish with a flurry, a little pop pass by Conor Tonge set up the replacement hooker to get over the whitewash for their ninth try, Whelan converted for a 65-7 lead. James O’Sullivan finished the tie in style, he was putting in a shift all afternoon and right at the death got their tenth and final try, their movement and skill in possession is a dream to watch and the winger made no mistake gathering on the right wing and racing in to score, Whelan missed the conversion, but Blackrock look like a dominant force.
