1A Semi: Clontarf too strong for Cork Con
Clontarf eased their way into the Energia All Ireland League Final with a convincing win at home to Cork Constituiton.
Clontarf lines of running regularly cut through the Con' defence and their efficiency in the Twenty-Two saw them finish off most of their opportunities.
Having set up the first try, Cian O'Donoghue ran in for a brace in a spell-binding period that put Clontarf 15-6 ahead.
Given an inch of space his speed and habdking ability destroyed the Cork side's defence. Con' responded on the stroke of half-time through John Forde but any hopes were dashed by an early second half Tadgh Bird for the hosts.
The Cork side had the benefit of a strong wind in the first-half and made a decent start, pinning 'Tarf back and winning a succession of early penalties.
Con' captain Aidan Moynihan stepped up to kick two over the bar for a six-point lead. Clontarf gradually grew into the game and a dominant ten-minute spell in the middle of the first-half proved to be the winning of the game.
The first real line-break came from nippy winger O'Donogue. Quick passing led to an opening for Michael Courtney as he notched the first try. Some great work by the pack had Con' on the backfoot and O'Donoghue showed his finishing abilities to score in the left-hand corner twice.
Conor Kelly missed three dificult conversions, and the Cork side were back in the game after John Browne followed up some excellent carries from Luke Chaill and Max Abbot to touch down.
Moynihan's conversion reduced the arrears to 15-13. With the wind behind them, it didn't take long for the home side to regain firm control. A great burst by full-back Tadgh Bird and Kelly's conversion made it a two-score game before Ivan Soroka got in on the scoring act on behalf of the pack to effectively kill the game off.
