Terenure deliver big win over Fintan’s

Terenure College ran in seven tries during their impressive 47-3 victory over St. Fintan’s High School.

Terenure played some fantastic free flowing rugby despite the miserable conditions in Clontarf.

St. Fintan’s High School had the boost of the wind at their backs for the first half and made use of it inside the first five minutes with a penalty from Luke Ingle from just outside the Terenure 22-metre line.

Terenure College almost had the instant impact when second row Oisin Shannon blocked down an attempted clearance from Conor Dribbin.

Shannon touched the ball down but the referee adjudged the ball to have gone dead and Fintan’s remained in the lead.

The aforementioned player did find a try just four minutes later after brilliant like break from winger James Clarke. Terenure recycled the ball and Shannon powered over, underneath the posts for the games first try. Jack Grimes added the extra points from the conversion to extend his side’s lead.

Just after the quarter of an hour mark, Terenure College struck again this time through inside centre Yago Fernandez Vilar.

His power and step took him away from the Fintan’s defence to put his side 14-3 ahead.

With conditions worsening over the course of the half, there were little opportunity for either side to gain more points and Terenure went into the interval with the lead.

Terenure remained in control at the start of the second period and their efforts were rewarded when captain Darragh Brooks scored his side’s third of the game off the back of a rolling maul.

Jack Grimes converted an extended their advantage to 18 points.

Terenure replacements proved decisive with both Peter MacNamara and Ben Nolan scoring quick fire tries just moments after being introduced.

Ultan Byrne was next on the scoresheet after peeling from the back of the scrum and over for yet another try for Terenure.

In the final play of the game, Josh Delaney became the third substitute to score to cap off a tremendous first round win for Terenure.
