Roundup: AIL – Women’s Division

The Women’s All Ireland League returned this weekend and Blackrock College increased their lead at the summit of the Top Four Competition after a bonus point victory away to Old Belvedere.

Railway Union remain Rock’s closest challengers after a convincing win away to UL Bohemian. Suttonians came out on top after their win over Ballincollig at Tanner Park in the Conference Competition, while there were also wins for Wicklow and Galwegians

Old Belvedere 5-44 Blackrock College, Saturday 12th February, Ollie Campbell Park.

Blackrock College made it four wins from their opening four games after a terrific bonus point victory over Belvo at Ollie Campbell Park. Tries from Maeve Liston, Katie Fitzhenry, Dorothy Hall and two a piece from Maggie Boylan and Michelle Claffey sealed the win for the league leaders. Old Belvedere are still searching for their first win since the season restarted in January and they host UL Bohemian next. It’s a clash between the top two sides next week where Blackrock will look to put one hand on the AIL trophy with a win over rivals Railway Union.

UL Bohemian 14-31 Railway Union, Saturday 12th February, UL Arena.

A fine first half performance from Railway kept them in contention for the Top Four title ahead of next week’s clash with Blackrock. The visitors’ scores came courtesy Niamh Byrne, Lindsay Peat, Eve Higgins and two from winger Aoife Doyle secured the win for the Dublin side. Muirne Wall and Chloe Pearse did put their names on the scoresheet for UL Bohemian but it wasn’t enough to overturn Railway Union.

Galwegians 41-0 Malone, Saturday 12th February, Crowley Park.

Wegians now sit in second place of the conference competition, four points adrift of Suttonians. Two tries from Mairead Coyne and one a piece from Ursula Sammon, Saskia Morrissey, Megan Walsh, Niamh O’Grady and Grace Browne Moran completed the bonus point rout for Galwegians. Malone are sitting just a point ahead of last placed Cooke and yet to find a win in the conference competition

Cooke 17-22 Wicklow, Saturday 12th February, Shaw’s Bridge.

Wicklow made in two wins on the bounce after a hard fought, narrow win over Cooke. The hosts led 10-5 at half time after tries from Kelly McCormill and Beth Cregan but Wicklow fought back and tries from Lauren Barry, Niamh Ni Dhroma, Megan McConnell and Ella Roberts sealed the valuable win. The Belfast side remain in last placed while Wicklow sit in fourth place. It’s a big task for Wicklow next as they host league leaders Suttonians while Cooke face Malone in an all-Ulster affair.

Ballincollig 22-34 Suttonians, Saturday 12th February, Tanner Park.

Suttonians kept their 100% record intact after a big away win over title rivals Ballincollig at Tanner Park. Four tries from Katie Farrell McCabe as well as one a piece from Catherine Martin and Molly Fitzgerald helped the side from the capital increase their lead at the summit of the table. Two tries from Heather Kennedy and one from Jayne Pennefather and Katelyn Fleming for Collig  wasn’t enough for the Rebel County side to steal the win.
