Ulster grab bonus point win over Scarlets

Ulster returned to winning ways in the United Rugby Championship, after a 27-15 bonus point win over the Scarlets at Kingspan Stadium tonight.

Angus Curtis, Sam Carter, Gareth Milasinovicj and Craig Gilroy all crossed over to help secure the maximum points haul. Nathan Doak impressed yet again from his place kicking and ball play.

The Scarlets provided a stern challenge for the northern province, testing their defence resolve and crossing for two tries which could have easily swung the balance in their favour.

Doak opened the scoring in the third minute, the scrum half landing a short range penalty for a 3-0 lead. Dan Jones replied with a penalty for the scarlets in the tenth minute to level the game.

After an uneventful passage of play after the penalty, Ulster were reduced to 14 men in the 27th minute as Craig Gilroy was sent to the sin bin, the winger making contact with his shoulder into the head of a Scarlets player, with the TMO sending him to the bin

Scarlets punished them minutes later with the man advantage, Samson Lee powered over from a close range maul, Jones landed the conversion for a 10-3 lead with half an hour elapsed on the clock.

Ulster responded minutes later, after a penalty was given in their favour they ran at the try line, the pressure mounting on the Welsh defence before Curtin crossed for their opening try, Doak kicking the conversion to level at 10-10 in the 35th minute, the final score of the half as they headed to the interval minutes later.

Doak had a great chance to cross for a second try six minutes after the restart, they broke well with the scrum half kicking the ball in behind the defence but Ioan Nicholas gathered the ball well to kill the danger.

Sam Carter managed to drive his large frame over to increase their lead in the 54th minute, intense pressure showing a crack in the defence enough for him to score the second try, Doak missing the conversion to leave it at 15-10.

Scarlets laid siege to the Ulster half of the field after the try, they had a try brought back for a foul, a TMO decision overruled a try and gave the grounding to be short, but on 63 minutes Kemsley Mathias powered his way through after several phases, the missed conversion levelling the game again at 15-15.

Just as Scarlets had got back level, the Ulstermen hit them for a third try just three minutes later, a great run through by the powerful Gareth Milasinovich crossing beside the posts, Doak this time made no error to give them a 22-15 lead.

Gilroy added the bonus point in the 69th minute, as he crossed from a Doak offload, the scrum half missed the conversion, but the try itself proved to be the last act in front of either goal, as Ulster will be happy to leave home soil with a bonus point against tough opponents.
