Warriors deliver in Connacht

The Glasgow Warriors take the bonus point back to the Scottish capital, after a 42-20 win over Connacht at The Sportsground this afternoon.

Despite 12 starters out due to international call ups, they battled hard to get the maximum points in Galway.

A brace of tries by Rufus McLean and Kyle Steyn along with a try by prop Fraser Brown and substitute hooker Johnny Matthews also crossing, six tries in the end sees Glasgow climb further up the table after the result.

They were relentless all afternoon as Connacht could not contest them in all areas, they were having a nightmare in defence as the visitors were causing mayhem in the backline, and easily could have had more than the six tries scored.

McLean got his first try of the season in the third minute, the winger crossing in the corner after a well worked phase of attack off a Glasgow scrum, giving them a 5-0 lead.

Glasgow went down to 14 men after eight minutes in the half, Richie Gray sent to the bin after a dangerous clearout against one of the Connacht players in the maul.

The Westerners tied things up with 12 minutes played, the number 12 Sam Arnold bursting through eluding then tackles to score, Cathal Forde landing his first conversion in Green to make it 7-5.

Glasgow breezes through for their second try after 18 minutes, Steyn receiving the ball from a line out and then running through to score without a challenge, Duncan Weir making it 12-7 with the conversion.

The Scottish club crossed for their third try after 35 minutes, Brown the man credited with the try as the entire Glasgow team looked to have been in the maul who got over, the missed conversion leaving it 17-7, a lead they would half reduced to seven, as Forde kicked a penalty just before the break, to leave it 17-10 at halftime.

Connacht started on the front foot as Paul Boyle, added their second try three minutes into the second half, the number 8 finding the space to cross over on the back of a held up maul, Forde kicking well again to level the tie at 17-17.

Weir added three points from a penalty to reclaim the lead for Glasgow, after 47 minutes the ill discipline slowly started to creep back into the Irish province, the fly half making no mistakes to punish them yet again. Forde again responded, landing another penalty to tie the game in the 50th minute.

Boyle was shown the sin bin after 53 minutes, the try scorer guilty of an illegal challenge and had his team down to 14 at a crucial time.

McLean wrapped up the bonus point for the visitors with their fourth try on the hour mark, he crossed in the corner after great phases of play saw him beat the tackle to score, the missed conversion making it 25-20.

The fifth followed shortly after Steyn managed his second of the afternoon, another gift of a try for the visitors as Connacht could not contain the strong Scottish backline, the conversion by substitute Ross Thompson making it a 12 point game, 32-20.

Weir was sharp again from the tee on the 73rd minute, his penalty landed another three for the visitors pushing out a 15 point lead, 35-20, what followed after was a major mistake at the back by Oran McNulty.

The replacement fullback failed to clear from his own try line, he was pushed out of play and from the five metre lineout, Glasgow added their sixth try on eighty minutes as Matthews got over from the driving maul. A disappointing result for Connacht, missing key men due to call ups they will go back to the drawing board for next weekend.
