Myler Magic for Ospreys in Ulster loss

14 points from the boot of Stephen Myler cancelled out an early Ulster penalty try to secure a 19-13 victory for Ospreys over Ulster at the Liberty Stadium in the United Rugby Championship.

Ulster started the first quarter of an hour the better of the two sides and their early work was rewarded with a penalty try after a deliberate knock on by winger Luke Morgan.

Ospreys replied from the restart courtesy of a Myler penalty to reduce the deficit.

The hosts grew into the game as the minutes ticked on and after constant pressure inside Ulster’s 22, Morgan Morris showed huge strength and determination to drive over the try line and give the Swansea outfit the lead for the first time.

Osprey’s frustrated Ulster during the opening half with Dan McFarland’s side having a lot of possession near the game line, but some heavy tackles and terrific turnovers prevented Ulster from increasing their tally.

John Cooney’s penalty levelled the affair again before Myler’s penalty gave Ospreys a 13-10 lead heading into the interval.

Ulster began the second half as they started the first and almost went over for their second try five minutes after the resumption. Sadly, for the visitors a combination of tough tackles and great defence with some poor handling meant they let Ospreys off the hook.

John Cooney’s penalty levelled the scores again heading into the final 25 minutes. Ospreys' defence really halted Ulster in their tracks every time the Irish province began to start playing their free-flowing rugby.

The Welsh side's effort at the breakdown also rewarded them with some well-earned penalties which talisman Stephen Myler took with open arms. Myler scored two further penalties to give them a six-point lead heading into the final minutes.

Michael Lowry’s line break saw the full back dance through many attempted tackles from Ospreys. Lowry looked to offload to Robert Baloucoune but his pass was poor and Ospreys managed to turn the ball over and secure a hard earned victory.

Ulster’s loss means that Leinster remain five points clear at the top of the United Rugby Championship after their victory over Connacht at the RDS last night.
