Roundup: AIL – Men’s Division 2B

It was a high scoring, try plentiful weekend in Division 2B of the Energia All Ireland League.

Greystones left it late for a second week in a row, edging out Sligo at Hamilton Park while there were also wins for promotion hopefuls, Blackrock College, Galway Corinthians and Wanderers. Malahide overcame Ballina at Estuary Road to claim their second win of the campaign.

Galway Corinthians 43-15 Galwegians, Friday 21st January, Corinthian Park.

Corinthians claimed a hard fought bonus point victory over local rivals Galwegians on Friday night. The win for the hosts narrows the gap to league leaders Greystones to just eight points. Galwegians are still without a win since matchday one and will need to find some sort of form if they’re to remain in Division 2B by the end of the season. Wegians face a tough task next week away to Greystones while Galway Corinthians face Malahide.

Dungannon 20-22 Blackrock College, Saturday 22nd January, Stevenson Park.

Rock narrowly edged out Dungannon in an entertaining clash in Stevenson Park. The side from the capital now move into third place following their victory, leaving them four points behind second placed Galway Corinthians and twelve behind leaders Greystones. Dungannon remain in seventh place but are still searching for their first win in six games. Blackrock host fourth placed Wanderers next week in an all Dublin affair while Dungannon travel to Mayo to face Ballina

Malahide 35-25 Ballina, Saturday 22nd January, Estuary Road.

Malahide claimed their second victory of the season at home to Ballina at Estuary Road this weekend. Their bonus point victory came thanks to tries from John Shine, Darren Morrin and Mick Day as well as a penalty try. Ballina found themselves 18-7 ahead going into the second period but Malahide’s strong and fast flowing rugby proved too much for the Connacht side.

Sligo 19-20 Greystones, Saturday 22nd January, Hamilton Park.

Greystones left it late again this week with a try from hooker Ntuthuko Mthembu, just moments from the death to seal their 10th win of the season. Sligo led for the majority of the affair with Cal Goddard’s first half try and 14 points from Josh Reeves giving the hosts the advantage for over 70 minutes. Con Callan was also on the scoresheet for the league leaders. Stones host Galwegians next at Dr.Hickey Park while Sligo face a trip north to Deramore Park to play Belfast Harlequins.

Wanderers 45-8 Belfast Harlequins, Saturday 22nd January, Merrion Road.

The Chaps got back to winning ways this weekend with a bonus point victory over promotion rivals Belfast Harlequins. It was a feisty affair at Merrion Road with both sides involving themselves in some big physical battles. Wanderers now leapfrog Belfast Harlequins in the standings moving them into fourth place in the league. Quins host Sligo next while Wanderers will look to build on this win when they face Blackrock College at Stradbrook.
