Roundup: AIL – Men’s Division 2B

It was a high scoring, entertaining first weekend during Division 2B of the Energia All Ireland League on Saturday.

Belfast Harlequins came from behind to defeat Malahide by a score of 28-24.

It was an end to end affair in Belfast with both sides playing some excellent free flowing, physical rugby from the off. Tries from Mark Glover, Eddie Gorrod and a late Jaz Andress finish secured a narrow win for the Ulster side.

Quins travel to Connacht next week to face Galway Corinthians and Malahide face a tough game at home to Greystones at Estuary Road.

Blackrock College RFC defeated Galway Corinthians 19-6 at Stradbrook thanks to tries from Roghan McMahon, Brian Colclough and nine points from the boot of Peter Quirke secured an opening day win for Blackrock. Two penalties from Dylan Keane wasn’t enough for the Galway men who host Belfast Harlequins next weekend in what will be a highly competitive affair.

The upset of the weekend came from Galwegians who had a narrow 23-22 win over Connacht rivals Ballina in an entertaining clash at Crowley Park. Galwegians fell to a 33-12 defeat against Connacht last month during the Connacht League but avenged that loss today. Galwegians travel to the capital next week to face Wanderers at Merrion Road meanwhile Ballina host Blackrock College RFC at Heffernan Park.

Paul Lennon’s Greystones side cruised to a comfortable bonus point victory over Ulster side Dungannon at Dr. Hickey Park. Tries from Mark Myler, Ferdia Kenny, Killian Marmion, Eoin Marmion and Andrew Kealy sent Stones top of the table with an emphatic win. Dungannon scored a late consolation try when winger Matthew Montgomery intercepted a wayward Greystones pass but it was a case of too little, too late for the Tyrone side. Greystones take the short trip up the N11 to face Malahide next Saturday while Dungannon host Sligo at Stevenson Park.

Tries from Enda Gavin, Guilherme Coghetto and Philip Carter as well as ten points from the boot of Euan Brown inspired the Connacht side to a hard fought 25-17 win at home to Wanderers at Hamilton Park. Wanderers host Galwegians next week while Sligo travel north to Dungannon to face a side with a point to prove in Matchday Two.
