Roundup: AIL – Men’s Division 2A

Queens University continued their dominance in the Energia All-Ireland League Men’s Division 2A, they claimed their tenth win of the season this weekend, keeping a tenth point gap ahead of second placed Ballymena.

Ballymena 42-17 UL Bohemian, Eaton Park

Ballymena brushed aside the Limerick based students, running in six tries in a big bonus point win, they remain ten points behind queens while they keep two ahead of Cashel.

Rhys Ervine crossed for the opening try for the hosts, the converted effort making it 7-0 before Bohs responded with their own converted effort. James McNabney pushed his club into the lead before the break with a converted try.

Ballymena crossed for four tries in the second half without reply a brace by Rodger McBurney, while Mark Thompson and Glen Baile also found their mark to score. The students managed two late consolation tries late on but it was all about the Ulster side in the end.

Dolphin 24-36 Cashel, Musgrave Park

Cashel made it seven straight wins in a row, as they defeated Munster rivals Dolphin at Musgrave Park. A big bonus point win sees them within two points of second place.

Daryl Foley opened the scoring for the hosts with an early penalty, before Cashel took control of the game, three quick tries saw them 19-3 ahead, before adding the bonus point shortly after.

They added a fifth try before Dolphin responded with two quick tries, Daryl Foley and Murray Linn the scores to make it 31-17, Cashel looked to be on the back foot as the Cork club got another try to reduce the scoreline to 31-24.

Cashel sprung back into life and added another try late on, they managed to keep their visitors at bay as they had pushed to get the bonus point but failed to make use of their possession in the end.

MU Barnhall 20-20 Buccaneers, Parsonstown

Barnhall & Buccaneers shared the points in Maynooth, an entertaining afternoon of rugby sees Barnhall pick up points in their recent run of poor form.

They dominated the opening half and built a three point lead, 13-10 as they headed into the half time interval, Buccs keeping on their heels as they looked to avoid defeat.

The visitors worked hard in the second half, their efforts were rewarded late on as they managed to come back from the death and snatch a draw as Barnhall looked to have won it in the end.

Old Crescent 21-20 Nenagh Ormond, Takumi Park

Old Crescent are up to fifth in the table after their home win over neighbours Nenagh, they survived a late converted try by the Tipperary club to take home all the points.

Nenagh lead 3-0 after a penalty on the ten minute mark, before Val McDermott struck with a try in the 20th minute to put the hosts ahead, Ronan McKenna landed the conversion to keep them ahead. Nenagh kicked another penalty just on the brink of half time to trial by a point at the break.

Ronan Reynolds struck in the 57th minute of the second half, he crossed for the second Crescent try as they looked to push out a lead being 14-6 ahead, Nenagh responded with their own converted try to trail by the minimum after 63 minutes.

Dan Hurley added the third Crescent try in the 70th minute, a score that looked to be the deciding factor as they were 21-13 ahead. Right at the death the visitors crossed for a late converted try, as they ended up suffering a one point loss.

Queens University 38-14 Rainey Old Boys, Dub Lane

Queens picked up another bonus point win, they defeated their Ulster rivals Rainey Old Boys, in another dominant display this weekend as they held their lead at the top.

They claimed their ninth bonus point of the year with the result, as Old Boys struggled to come into the game, managing two tries of their own but failed to test the students on the day.
