Preview: AIL – Men’s Division 2A

The second round of the Energia Men’s All-Ireland League Division 2A, produced some exciting rugby and four bonus point wins along the way, as leaders Queen’s University, MU Barnhall, Dolphin and Ballymena, all secured the extra point.

UL Bohemian and Cashel will kick off this week's action, as they face off at the UL Arena, on Friday night at 8pm against Cashel.

The Limerick outfit went down 38-13 to MU Barnhall last weekend. Two Harry Byrne penalties and a Kieran O’Shea try on the hour mark, was their only points of the tie. Zero points in their opening two games, they will aim for better this time round.

The meeting of Tipperary sides Cashel and Nenagh Ormond, was cancelled due to Covid-19, as both sides were awarded two points. They will aim for their first win of the season, against bottom placed UL

Ballymena welcome Shannonsiders Old Crescent, to Eaton Park as the game kicks off at 2:30pm in Saturday, with the rest of the action to take place at the same time, they look to record back to back home victories.

Tim Small displayed a fantastic individual performance, in Ballymena’s 29-22 bonus point victory over Buccaneers, Small kicked nine points and had a hand in a number of Ballymena’s tries.

The Limerick side faced a tough task last weekend, they went down 40-21, to Queen's University. They racked up three tries in the defeat, Cian Raele, Jack O’Mahony and another added by their Forwards, they are looking for their opening win, after back to back defeats.

Buccaneers welcome Nenagh Ormond, to Dubarry Park, as they look to shake off defeat from last weekend, while Nenagh had their game cancelled.

Buccs played well, coming back to draw level in the tie, but failed to get the job done, a Michael Hanley penalty got Buccaneers off the mark, with captain Evan Galvin, Connacht Academy hooker Declan Adamson and a penalty try, helping them come back into the tie. 

League leaders Queens University play host to Dolphin, as they aim to record their third win of the season, and secure another bonus point. Dolphin will look to claim a scalp, against the early pace setters, as they trail in the table by one point.

The students got the better of Old Crescent 40-21, as Graham Curtis who made his Ireland Sevens debut last year, ran in a hat-trick of tries, with Conor McMenamin, David Whitten and Robbie Johnston also touching down.

Dolphin meanwhile were big winners over Rainey Old Boys, the Cork side romped to a 56-13 win at Musgrave Park. 

Scrum half Daryl Foley put in an excellent kicking display at Musgrave Park, finishing with 21 points. Brian O’Mahony bagged a brace, as his side notched six tries.

After their heavy defeat last week, Rainey Old Boys will look to reignite their early form, as they face a tough challenge in MU Barnhall. The side joint top with Queens University, they will be aiming to add another high score, as they look to close the gap.

Rainey got up and running with a Scott McLean penalty, before centre Conor Fitzsimons crossed for their opening try. Rainey had two players sent to the sin bin, as McLean added another penalty in between, for their only points of the half.

First half tries from Conor Lacey and Shane Stokes set MU Barnhall on their way to a 38-13 bonus point success against UL Bohemians. The Kildare side added four more second half tries, a result which sees them tied at the summit.
