Roundup: AIL – Women’s Division 1

Round two of the Division 1 Women’s All-Ireland Rugby League exposed some serious gaps in class throughout the league as Blackrock, Railway Union, Old Belvedere, Cooke and UL Bohemians all ran ragged on their opponents.

Willow Lodge saw the most gruesome outcome of the day as the newly formed side suffered a heavy defeat to the reigning champions Union.

John Cronin’s outfit clocked a whopping 142-0 to put themselves outright leaders in the league with a healthy score difference and 10 points to their name thanks to trys from Ailsa Hughes (3), Katie Heffernan (4), Niamh Byrne (2), Aoife McDermott (3), Stephanie Carroll, Maggie MacKinnon (3), Katie O'Dwyer, Claire Boles, Anna Mc Gann (2), Lisa Callan, Aoife O'Shaughnessy, Grainne O'Loughlin and Amanda Mc Quaid.

Nicole Caughey also kept things ticking over on the conversion front, asserting to all in the competition that Railway are indeed a massive force to be reckoned with.

Elsewhere the 12 o’clock start saw UL Bohemians triumph over Galwegians 43-7 in Crowley Park as Ursula Sammon’s effort wasn’t enough to plough down the might of Eilís Cahill, Fiona Reidy, Alana McInerney, Chloe Pearse (2), Eva McCormack, Aoife Corey and co and so they now find themselves second from bottom in the table.

Ballincollig meanwhile took the game to Cooke but found their team the wrong side of the 24-10 outcome upon the final whistle, as did Malone who were undone by a ferocious Belvo in Ollie Campbell Park.

Blackrock held Suttonians to deadlock on the scorecard at the JJ McDowell Memorial Grounds as they put away 50 points to sink their fellow Dublin crew. Mairead Holohan (2), Anna Doyle (2), Hannah O'Connor, Aoibhean Reilly and Eimear Corri the stars of the show there, it will bode well for them as they take on The Garden County in the next series.

Also fast approaching next week is that of Cregagh Red Sox’s game against league leaders Railway, as Suttonians host Cooke, Belvedere take a trip to UL and The Westerners clash with Ballincollig in Tanner Park.
