AIL Preview: Division 2C

Division 2C of the Energia All-Ireland returns this weekend, with some new clubs entering the league. Recently relegated club Ballina will be keen to return to Division 2B, while Skerries will be confident of going one step further than they did last year, after losing to Enniscorthy in the playoff final.

Ulster outfit Instonians also secured senior status after beating Bective Rangers in the penultimate game of the campaign.

Here’s all you need to know ahead of the first round in Division 2C

Ballina v Skerries, Saturday October 1st, Heffernan Park, 2:30pm.

It’s a mouth-watering start to the season in Division 2C, with two of the pre-season favourites facing off in round one. Despite finishing ahead of Galwegians in Division 2B last year, they fell to a narrow defeat at the hands of their Connacht rivals, sending them down to Division 2C.

Skerries finished the campaign in second place and beat Bangor on their way to the playoff final. The North Dublin side missed out on promotion but will be eager to start their season in the best possible way.

Bangor v Sundays Well, Saturday October 1st, Upritchard Park, 2:30pm

An impressive 13 wins last season saw Bangor finish comfortably in the top four. Their promotion hopes were left on hold for another year after a defeat to Skerries but will be confident to seal one of the two promotion spots available this time around. Sundays Well finished in 7th place last year and will have to improve if they’re to surprise some people this time around.

Bruff v Omagh Academicals, Saturday October 1st, Kilballyowen Park, 2:30pm.

Just two points separated these sides at the end of last season with Bruff finishing in 6th and Omagh Academicals in 7th.  The last time the sides met was back in February where Bruff beat Omagh 17-15. With a good start to the season vital to both teams, it would be tough to see anything other than a tight, hard-fought affair.

Clonmel v Midleton, Saturday October 1st, Ardghaoithe, 2:30pm

A fifth-place finish for Midleton last season meant they missed out on a place in promotion play-offs. This weekend, they travel to Clonmel, a side who narrowly avoided relegation thanks to their final day win over City of Derry. The Tipperary outfit won just two games during the league campaign and must improve if they’re to avoid the drop this time around.

Instonians v Tullamore, Saturday October 1st, Shaws Bridge, 2:30pm

Instonians face Tullamore this weekend in their first game back in the AIL. A win over Bective Rangers rewarded them with a return to senior status at the end of April. Tullamore will have their eyes set on promotion after a fourth placed finish in the league last time around, which saw them win 11 times across the season.
