AIL Roundup: Women’s Energia Cup Week 6

Week 6 provided us with more action and excitement, Railway Union made it six wins on the spin, while Wicklow continued to impress as they held down third spot, Old Belvedere secured their first win.

Galwegians P-P Blackrock College, Crowley Park

The tie between Galwegians and Blackrock was postponed due to unplayable pitch conditions and is refixed for next weekend.

Wicklow 34-0 Ballincollig, Ashtown Lane

Wicklow have nailed down third place in the competition after getting their fourth win of the competition over Ballincollig.

Crossing for six tries in the contest, another big bonus point win shows their strength now as a big player in the league after a standout season this year, limiting their opponents to no score they put in a dominant shift.

Leading 24-0 at the break, they remained in full control to add two further tries in the second half to put the game beyond doubt, Caoimhe Molloy crossed for two tries, while Erin McConnell, Linda Dempsey, Saoirse O’Reilly and Aoibhin Stone all grabbed one each.

Old Belvedere 41-0 Cooke, Ollie Campbell Park

Old Belvedere secured their first win in the cup with a comprehensive 41-0 win over Cooke in Ollie Campbell Park.

A result that lifts Belvedere off the foot of the standings and sees them now sit sixth on score difference, Emma Buckley notched their opening try, Katie Whelan and Jess Keatring added further tries with Jemma Farrell adding one conversion for a 17-0 half time lead.

Into the second and the tries kept coming, Keating would grab a second try in that half, as would Clare Gorman as she bagged a brace in the half, Emma Tilly also getting in on the scoring having come off the bench, Farrell added two more conversions in the dominant performance. 

Railway Union 48-10 Suttonians, Park Avenue

Railway Union kick started the weekend’s action on Thursday night as they overcame Suttonians 48-10 in Park Avenue, to make it six straight games unbeaten in the cup.

They would do all of the damage in the opening half, after amassing a 41-5 lead at the break, Niamh Byrne, Stephanie Carroll, Lindsay Peat, Sonia McDermott, Keelin Brady, Chloe Blackmore and Megan Collis all crossed for tries for the hosts, while Hazel Simmons added three conversions, Mary Healy managed to cross for Sutts first half try.

Into the second half and it was much of a closer affair than the opening half, as both would exchange a try each, Lena Kibler adding the second for the visitors, while Chisom Ugwueru was sprung from the bench to grab Railways eight try, which Simmons converted.
