AIL Roundup: Division 2B Week 17

Sligo, Wanderers, Belfast Harlequins and Rainey Old Boys are all locked in battle for fourth spot on the final weekend, at the foot Wegians and Scorthy scrap to stay up.

Galway Corinthians (5T) 31-27 (4T) Galwegians, Corinthian Park

Galwegians sit in the relegation play-off spot, as they took two bonus points from Friday’s defeat to neighbours Corinthians.

Wegians added two early tries for a 14-0 lead, before Michael O’Reilly crossed for a try for the hosts to get them on the board, \Wegians would add a penalty before the break for a 17-5 lead.

Harry Rogers and Finn McNulty both added tries after the restart to tie the contest, just after the hour mark McNulty was in again to bag his brace and snatch the bonus point, 24-17 was the wrong end of the scoreboard for Wegians, however as we ticked into the final ten two quick tries saw Wegians snatch their BP and regain the lead, but right at the death Oran McNulty crossed to steal the win for the hosts.

Belfast Harlequins (3T) 20-22 (3T) Rainey Old Boys, Deramore Park

A late converted try from Rainey has made the race for fourth spot all the more interesting on the last day.

Quinns started better racing into an early 10-0 lead from a converted try followed by a penalty, Rainey crossed for their opening try just before the break to leave it 10-5 on the scoreboard.

Into the second half and a converted try followed by a penalty had the visitors ahead by five in this Ulster derby, the Belfast side however crossed for two unconverted tries to look to secure the outcome but Rainey had the final say and that fourth spot is anyones.

Dungannon (3T) 22-0 Greystones, Stevenson Park

Dungannon aided their hopes of a spot in the play-offs with a big win over Greystones on home soil.

A brace of tries from Daniel Mikolajczyk aided their charge while Ben McCaughey also crossed along with kicking two conversions and a penalty.

Enniscorthy (1T) 7-24 (4T) Wanderers, Alcast Park

A tale of mixed fortunes on Alcast Park as Scorthy returned to the foot of the table while Wanderers moved to fifth aiming for a play-off spot.

Wanderers built a 14-0 lead early on before Ben Kidd converted a David Farrell try that got the hosts on the board, but it was their only score of the tie, the Dubliners wrapping the tie up with two further tries to secure their bonus point.

Malahide (3T) 24-26 (4T) Sligo, Estuary Road

Sligo produced an emphatic late comeback to snatch a bonus point win in Malahide that saw them climb to fourth.

It was a nip and tuck starr at Estuary Road, Euan Brown dotted early for Sligo before Malahide levelled, a penalty but the hosts in front but a penalty try saw Sligo back ahead by four, that was until on the stroke of half time Malahide added their second try to lead 17-14 at the break.

Another converted try put Malahide ten points ahead after the restart, Brown added a second try to make it a two point game, before Hubert Gilvarry dove over for the match winning score as Sligo now are in pole position to make the play-offs.
