AIL Roundup: Division 2B Week 10

Greystones continue to lead 2B with their tenth win in a row, Galway Corinthians just behind them in the race for silverware, elsewhere Enniscorthy picked up their first win of the season in empathic circumstances.

Dungannon 7-10 Rainey Old Boys, Stevenson Park

Rainey picked up another win over their local neighbours after finishing off the second half to win a low scoring encounter.

Chances came for both teams in the opening half, but Scott McLean landed a 30 metre penalty to put Rainey 3-0 ahead for the only score of the half. Into the second things started to heat up as just before the hour mark Ben Connolly was in close to the posts for the opening try, with Ben Caughey adding the extras for a 7-3 lead. Shades of the previous weekend were on the cards as Rauney were over through Tommy O’Hagan with McLean giving them a three point lead, but the hosts had no reply as they battled for a score.

Enniscorthy 44-0 Galwegians, Alcast Park

Enniscorthy picked up their first win of the competition ending a run of nine games without a win, as they produced a bonus point whitewash over Galwegians, closing the gap between them to five points.

Jack Kelly kicked them into an early 3-0 lead before Nick Doyle got the game’s opening try minutes later which Kelly converted, they continued a rich run of form to get a second try and move 15-0 clear as Wegians failed to reply. Sebastian Pim raced in for their third just before the break with the conversion giving them a 22-0 lead at the interval.

Their dominance continued into the second half Angelo Todisco crossed for the bonus point try, before Brian Bolger kept the pressure on as the hosts were 32-0 clear and the win was very much in sight, Seb Pim would finish the day on a hat trick as he crossed for two late tries to gap off a phenomenal display from Scorthy.

Galway Corinthians 26-12 Sligo, Corinthian Park

Galway Corinthians have kept on the tail of Greystones in the title race with just three points the difference after a bonus point win on home soil over Sligo.

Ross Hickey powered over for Sligo for the games opening try but Euan Brown’s conversion was blown off course by the breeze, John Claffey replied for the hosts as he crossed in the corner but their conversion also missed the mark. Corinthians stayed on the offensive and on the stroke of half time, Mark Boyle got their second try of the contest with Logan Allen’s strike off the tee making it a 12-5 lead at half-time.

After the restart it was the Tribesmen who remained on top, off the back of a well worked maul Jack Noone crossed for their third which Allen converted before Claffey notched his second to get their bonus point try minutes later for a 26-5 lead off Allen’s conversion. Sligo hit back late as Donnacha Byrne powered over with Brown adding the extras.

Malahide 12-7 Belfast Harlequins, Estuary Road

Malahide are up to sixth place after a controlled performance against Belfast Harlequins saw them get their fourth win of the season.

The hosts took command in the first half and put up a 12-0 lead going into the break, Harlequins got a second half converted try but just could not find a late comeback to equalise. 

Wanderers 3-17 Greystones, Merrion Road

Greystones remained unbeaten after ten rounds in 2B, having to come from behind 3-0 at the break they hit two tries to wrap up the tie.

The hosts kicked a penalty for a 3-0 advantage midway in the opening half the only score as conditions made life difficult, into the second half the Wicklow natives levelled with a penalty, the game kicked into life however as two tries without reply kept the visitors atop the summit of the table.
