AIL Roundup: Division 2A Week 6

The top of 2A remains tightly contested between Queens University and Blackrock College as score difference separates them, Cashel just two points behind them both.

Ballymena 21-22 MU Barnhall, Eaton Park

In a dramatic tie in Ulster, MU Barnhall snatched victory with the last score of the game, as they produced a spirited second half comeback.

Barnhall crossed for an early try after a rolling maul from their line out gave them the chance, Ballymena replied through Callum Patterson to leave it 7-7, an exchange of penalties left the score tied 10-10 at half time.

Mena struck early in the second half as Glen Baillie crossed for an unconverted try, two penalties from Ross McKay saw their lead stretch to 21-10. James Howe was yellow carded for the second time late on, as Barnhall got two unconverted tries to snatch it at the death.

Blackrock College 26-25 Navan, Stradbrook

What a game, the two teams looking to claw back Queens produced a highly dramatic tie, as Blackrock produced a comeback worthy of lazarus to take the win.

Navan looked to be on the cards of a whitewash as they had a first half bonus point coming in 20-0 ahead at half time.

They added a fifth after the break with conversion attempts proving hard to come by, the Rock replied and also landed a bonus point, this time the extras were added, Brian ‘Cokes’ Colclough the match winner in the end for Blackrock.

Dolphin 19-24 Cashel, Musgrave Park

Cashel remain third after coming from behind to control the second half in a tight Munster derby.

Dolphin were out the trap early and controlled the first half with Cashel just behind, leading 19-17 at half time. The visitors would come back and crossed for a converted try to take the result.

Old Crescent 29-28 Nenagh Ormond, Takumi Park

Old Crescent have recorded a second win in the division in a row, after producing an inspired showing to defeat their Tipperary neighbours.

Nenagh controlled the first half, Ronan McKenna kicked Crescent ahead early, but Nenagh managed a bonus point try haul for a 28-3 lead in the half, Crescent with two before the break to make it 28-15.

Michael O’Hanrahan added the third Crescent try after 51 minutes, Nenagh ahead by six 28-22, Crescent kept going, Jack O’Mahony putting them ahead after McKenna kicked the conversion in the 72nd minute, late drama but they held firm to record the win.

Queens University 48-19 UL Bohemian, Dub Lane

It took until the second half for Queens to really put a foothold in the game, but they remain top after the commanding bonus point win.

UL put in another fine display to lead 14-10 at half time, they wilted in that second half as Queens just did what they do best and that was cross for scores, the board never looked like favouring UL in that second half.
