AIL Roundup: Division 1B Week 7

Buccaneers put themselves four points clear at the top of the table with a comfortable 9-23 win over St Mary’s. City of Armagh’s good form continues with them jumping into second place on the table and both Malone and Banbridge got crucial victories at home.

St Mary’s College 9-23 Buccaneers, Templeville Road

Buccaneers brought an end to St Mary’ 100% winning record from home this season after a solid second half performance.

Sean Cronin’s men had a slender 6-5 advantage at the halftime break. They were hoping to become only the second team to beat the Athlone team this season.

However, Eddie O’Sullivan’s men went up a gear in the second half. Steveni Lombard, Shane Jenning and Harry West scoring all of their 3 tries on the day. That’s six wins on the bounce for them. They’ve taken to life back up in 1B like a duck takes to water.

UCC 15-25 Old Wesley, The Madyke

Old Wesley got a big win on the road beating UCC 15-25 on Saturday afternoon.

Away form is something that has let Old Wesley down a bit this season, but this certainly wasn’t the case at the weekend. Nathan Randles, Alex Molloy and Eoin Monahan got their key tries. That win catapults them back into the playoff places.

Things haven’t  went to plan for Michael Bradley and UCC in the last few weeks after they had such a bright start to the league campaign, winning their four opening matches. Johnny Murphy and Sean Condon getting their only tries of the contest.

City of Armagh 31-20 Old Belvedere, Palace Grounds

City of Armagh look like an unstoppable force at home in the Palace Ground this season as they secured another convincing home victory on Saturday.

They secured the bonus point, running in five tries.  James McCormick, Kyle Faloon, Jack Treanor, Shea O’Brien, Ryan O’Neill all crossing the whitewash for the hosts.

Old Belvedere have had back-to-back defeats now. They are slowly slipping down into the wrong end of the table. Saturday’s clash with Malone has now turned into a huge game for both clubs.

Banbridge 35-20 Naas, Rifle Park

Banbridge got a much-needed win over Johne Murphy’s Naas on Saturday.

The Ulstermen recovered from a 10-20 deficit at half time. Robin Sinton, Neil Kilpatrick, Max Lyttle, Peter Cromie all scored tries, contributing to the bonus point win.

Naas just didn’t get firing in that second half. They also sit in the bottom half of the table.

Malone 20-17 Highfield, Gibson Park

Malone held on to get a huge 20-17 win over Highfield at the weekend.

Despite a second half comeback from Highfield, the Belfast club got the win.
