AIL Roundup: Division 1A Week 8

Terenure College have gone 8 from 8 after being pushed all the way by the valiant efforts of Trinity. Young Munster keep the pressure on the top 4, winning their third game on the bounce. UCD also got a great result at home to Lansdowne, getting only their second win of the season, helping them climb up to 7th in the table.

Terenue College 23-21 Dublin University, Lakelands Park

A late Caolan Dooley penalty maintained Terenure College’s unbeaten run, making it 8 wins from 8 games in the league so far this season.

The game definitely lived up to the billing as a true classic was played out. The hosts led 13-7  at halftime. Luke Clohessy scored their only try of the half. Dooley kicked two penalties. The winger made a 13-point contribution off the kicking tee throughout  the game.

The lead exchanged hands on numerous occasions throughout the second half, Gavin Jones put the students into the ascendency for the first time when he got over for his second try in two games 

Nure retook the lead. Scrum half Alan Bennie sniped over from close range after some good phase play oft the lineout.

There was more twists in the tail. Aran Egan kicked a lovely ball through  for Ronan Quinn who scored the try. Egan topped it off by kicking a great conversion to put them back in front. 

However, it was Sean Skehan’s men who had the last say, Dooley slotted a late penalty in amen corner, giving his team their eighth consecutive league victory 

Credit has to go to Tony Smeeth’s youngsters who definitely gave the league leaders their toughest challenge to date, but as we ask every week, can anybody stop Nure?

Cork Constitution 22-29 Clontarf, Templehill

Clontarf got back to winning ways after a strong second half performance earned them a hard fought 22-29 win over the inform Cork Con.

Tarf scored 3 vital tries in the second half. it’s almost a foregone conclusion but Dylan Donnellan scored again, they were given a penalty try and centre Michael Courtney got their all-important final try which won them the game and secured them the try bonus point. 

Cork Con came into the contest on a 5-game winning streak. They led 15-10 at the halftime interval, however they couldn’t find their sixth consecutive victory. They scored 3 tries on the day, James Murphy, Alessandro Heaney and Billy Crowley all getting over the whitewash. They did take a losing bonus point from the game. 

Shannon 3-32 Young Munster, Thomond Park Main Pitch

Gearoid Prendergast has his side motoring as they picked up another impressive and convincing win over Shannon on the main Thomand Park pitch on Saturday.

Dan Walsh has been one of the standout players in the division so far this season. He found himself on the scoresheet twice.  Wingers Conor Phillips and Conor Hayes also scoring tries.

The cookies sit just outside the top 4 places with a big game coming up against Terenure College this Saturday.

UCD 27-26 Lansdowne, Belfield

UCD got only their second league win of the campaign at home at against Lansdowne on Saturday.

Niall Carroll scored twice , Alex O’Grady and Tim Corkery getting the other tries in a bonus point win which saw them rise to 7th in the table.

Lansdowne almost made the great comeback, scoring four tries of their own and securing two bonus points.

Garryowen 10-28 Ballynahinch, Dooradoyle

Ballynahinch were the next team to beat the struggling Garryowen. 

The Ulstermen secured the bonus point, with inform centre George Pringle on the scoresheet again, getting 2 more tries to his name.
