AIL Preview: Women’s Energia Cup Week 6

As we head into Week 6 of the Energia Cup, sides look to keep up a winning run as the hunt for silverware continues. Railway Union made it six games unbeaten in the early game of the round.

Wicklow V Ballincollig, Saturday March 11th, Ashtown Lane, 3pm

Third place Wicklow aim to continue their winning ways as they host seventh placed Ballincollig.

Wicklow aim for a third win in a row, having overcame Cooke and Suttonians in recent weeks, they are indeed a strong side as conference champions, they are behind the leaders but a strong finish looks on the cards.

Ballincollig have just one win in the cup and are out for better fortunes as they travel east to meet Wicklow, the Cork side did not play last weekend but in their last outing fell to a 74-0 defeat to UL, they are looking to avoid a third straight defeat.

Galwegians V Blackrock College, Saturday March 11th, Crowley Park, 5pm

Fifth entertain Fourth, as Blackrock travel West looking to overcome their 43-11 defeat last weekend.

Galwegians picked up just their second win of the series after defeating Old Belvedere 29-14, it was an ideal reply after a 68-12 defeat to Railway Union the week before, with two wins in their last three, they will have momentum to try get a third win.

Blackrock meanwhile dropped to fourth spot after their defeat to UL last weekend, a heavy defeat that will hopefully for their sake not knock them mentally coming into this tie, a win will give them momentum for what comes next.

Old Belvedere V Cooke, Saturday March 11th, Ollie Campbell Park, 5pm

Bottom placed Belvedere remain looking for their first points of the season as they welcome Cooke to Ollie Campbell Park.

No wins from their opening four games and no points scored, leaves them needing something from this tie to finish out the cup on a high point, they had great form in the league but missing some key performers has seen them struggle in the cup.

Cooke meanwhile were beaten heavily by Railway last time out falling to a 84-12 defeat at home, this weekend they will look to grab a second win of the series if they can inflict further woe on the side at the bottom of the table.

Railway Union 48-10 Suttonians, Park Avenue

Railway Union kick started the weekend’s action on Thursday night as they overcame Suttonians 48-10 in Park Avenue, to make it six straight games unbeaten in the cup.

They would do all of the damage in the opening half, after amassing a 41-5 lead at the break, Niamh Byrne, Stephanie Carroll, Lindsay Peat, Sonia McDermott, Keelin Brady, Chloe Blackmore and Megan Collis all crossed for tries for the hosts, while Hazel Simmons added three conversions, Mary Healy managed to cross for Sutts first half try.

Into the second half and it was much of a closer affair than the opening half, as both would exchange a try each, Lena Kibler adding the second for the visitors, while Chisom Ugwueru was sprung from the bench to grab Railways eight try, which Simmons converted.
