Review: Lidl NFL Div 3 Week 6

The Division 3 finalists will not be known until next weekend after the penultimate weekend of fixtures. A number of teams are in contention for a place in the final while down at the bottom Offaly are in the relegation play-off with Sligo and Longford battling to avoid finishing in the bottom two.

Wexford 7-08 Longford 1-03

Wexford brushed aside the challenge of Longford in Wexford Park and kept their hopes for a place in the Division 3 final alive. 

The home side scored five of their goals in the first half as Longford struggled to contain them. Longford pulled a goal back but they trailed 5-04 to 1-00 going in at the interval.

Wexford didn’t let up in the scoring in the second half. This result left Longford still second from bottom and fighting to avoid a place in the relegation play-off.

Sligo 1-05 Kildare 3-15

Goals from Neasa Dooley and Ellen Dowling set Kildare up for a fine win over Sligo in Kilglass this afternoon. 

Kildare were in control right from the start of the game and a third goal before half-time gave them a 16 point lead – 3-09 to 0-02.

Sligo got a consolation goal in the second half and battled hard but just couldn’t compete with Kildare as Diane O’Hora’s side met it five wins out of six. It all comes down to the final game for them to secure a place in the Division 3 final.

Down 4-14 Offaly 1-07

Down kept up the pressure on the top 2 in Division 3 and left them still in contention for a place in the Division 3 final with an excellent win over bottom side Offaly.

This result means that Offaly will face into a relegation play-off. Down took the game to the Faithful County right from the start they scored three goals in the opening half and kept Offaly scoreless. The lead was 3-09 to 0-00 at half-time.

Down didn’t let up with the scoring in the second half and hit a fourth goal. Offaly battled after the break and scored 1-07.

Clare 1-14 Louth 1-05

Clare recorded a third win in a row to defeat manager Wayne Freeman’s former side Louth by 9 points in Doonbeg. It keeps Clare still in the promotion hunt going into the final games of the campaign.

The Banner were dominant in the first half. A goal from Amy Sexton in the 19th minute helped Clare to a 1-12 to 0-00 lead at half-time. 

Louth came back at Clare in the second half but they had left themselves with too much to do after the first half. Clare were able to hold on for a valuable win.
