Report: Drumkeerin v St. Brigid’s

A strong first half performance from St. Brigids, in which they hit three goals without reply, lay the foundation for their victory in this first round Intermediate championship encounter last Sunday morning in Drumkeerin.

The winners led by those three goals at half time, goals coming from Siomha Quinn, Rachel Dolan and Mary McKeon. Quinn also hit over two points as did Carla LeGuen with McKeon ending the half with a point, Niamh McPartland scored three of the home teams five first half points, the other two coming from Kayla Maguire and Anna Hazlett.

The winners played some lovely football in the first half, defended well and broke at speed to cause the Drumkeerin defence all sorts of problems. The sin bin of Shyneece Gallagher didn’t help the home teams cause and they found themselves facing an uphill battle in the second half.

The third quarter was Drumkeerins best spell of the game, hitting two goals from Hazlett and an Ella McNamara penalty with McPartland adding a point with the winners just adding two points to their tally through LeGuen and McKeon. Just four points between the sides but St.Brigids came more into the game, hitting three points without reply through Ciana Stringer and two from Aisling Quinn to go seven points up.

The losers brought it back to four with points from Hazlett and two from McPartland to reduce the gap to four but it was too little, too late and St.Brigids held out for a deserved victory.
