Galway Kickstart Campaign With Win Over Cork

Kate Slevin came off the bench and scored 1-03 as Galway defeated Cork in the opening game of Group 4 of the All-Ireland Ladies SFC at Pearse Stadium.

Cork had been ahead by one point when Slevin was introduced. She made an impact kicking over two frees to edge her side ahead by one point in the 46th minute. It was a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Minutes later Nicola Ward set Ailbhe Davoren up for her second goal of the game and Slevin finished off a fine display with a goal in the 58th minute.

In a tight first half the sides were level five times. Galway held a slender one point lead at half-time 1-7 to 1-6.

Doireann O’Sullivan opened the scoring with a pointed free in the fifth minute before Hannah Noone levelled for Galway. Galway took the lead two minutes later when Davoren found the back of the net with a stunning strike after she raced through the Cork defence.

Cork were back in front in the 14th minute. Galway keeper Karen Connolly pulled off a fantastic save and the ball went out for a ‘45. Eimear Kiely took the ‘45, Doireann O’Sullivan’s shot was blocked down and it fell nicely to Ciara O’Sullivan who fired to the net.

Roisin and Tracey Leonard had Galway level in the 15th minute. The sides were level on three more occasions as Galway came back at Cork. A fine point from Davoren in the 29th minute gave Galway the edge going in at the break.

Six minutes into the second half and another Doireann O’Sullivan free drew the sides level again. Minutes later she scored a neat point from play to put Cork in front but in the space of 10 minutes the game changed in Galway’s favour.

Slevin put Galway ahead and in the 49th minute Davoren finished off a fine move to fire an excellent strike to the net. Slevin and O’Sullivan (free) traded points before Ward was again involved in another Galway goal, this time playing a good pass to Slevin for her to coolly slot home.
