Saffrons Top Group 4 In Comfortable Win Over Longford

Antrim have continued to make strides this season, the Saffrons booking a home tie in the Quarter Finals with a 13 point win over Longford.

Orlaith Prenter scored 1-4 including a second half penalty in the win, while Lara Dahunsi and Grainne McLaughlin both have the shooting boots on, kicking five and four points respectively.

Grace Shannon put in a show for Longford, kicking seven of their eight points, the loss now does see them in danger of relegation, they will have to pull the socks up to remain an Intermediate side, as Westmeath advance as the other team out of this group.

Shannon gave the Midlanders the lead after a fine point 3 minutes in, but Antrim quickly went to work, Dahunsi and Prenter with two points each before Prenter grabbed her third to end the quarter 0-5 to 0-1, in favour of the home side.

Maria O’Neill had a goal chance in that spell that could have put daylight between the sides early, but that was well saved after her original effort came back off the uprights and she dashed in for goal, only for Dahunsi to finish the rebound.

Aine Tubridy, Dahunsi and Grainne McLaughlin all kicked further scores putting seven between them, on the 20 minute mark Shannon landed a free that ended their wait for a score, but it was still an uphill battle.

Dahunsi and McLaughlin were driving the Antrim side ahead in the forward line, another point each, keeping their momentum high of taking the result, Shannon would kick three further points in the half, but Laura Agnew pointed in stoppage time for a 0-12 to 0-5 lead.

McLaughlin started Antrim off on the right foot with the early score in the second half, but two more Shannon points, had six between the teams by the 41st minute. Agnew kicked her second point, before Dahunsi was brought down for a penalty, up stepped Prenter and she fired home, 1-14 to 0-7.

Katie Crawford got her sides final point, but Antrim capped off the result in style, Dahunsi and McLaughlin both getting their final points, Bronagh Devlin popped over a shot from play, before Orla Corr, who was terrific in defence getting a fine point off the outside of the boot in stoppage time.
