Mohill 5-10 – 0-18 Aughawillan

Mohill goals defeat Aughawillan in round 4 of the Leitrim Senior Championship

A flurry of goals from a potent Mohill forward line saw Eamonn O’ Hara’s team pick up the two valuable points on offer in an enthralling round 4 game played in summer-like conditions on Saturday evening.

The supporters in attendance at Philly McGuinness Park were treated to a score fest in which the more clinical Mohill team edged out the 2018 Champions by a seven-point margin.

A brace apiece from Keith Beirne and Jordon Reynolds as well as an excellent finish from right half-back Alan Tuthill served notice that Mohill have the firepower to have a big say in the remainder of the campaign.

Despite kicking a fantastic 18 points the visitors will rue two missed gilt-edged goal-scoring opportunities in the first half when Gary Plunkett and later Morgan Quinn were brilliantly denied by Padraig Tighe in the Mohill goal.

Mohill led by 3-3 to 0-9 at the halftime whistle. The first goal came in the fourth minute when Jordon Reynolds caught a long ball before turning and finishing low to the net past Colin McGuire. Alan Tuthill scored the second two minutes later when he got forward to finish off a fine move involving Keith Beirne and Domhnaill Flynn.

Aughawillan relied on points from Morgan Quinn, Mark and Gary Plunkett and Pearce Dolan to leave the score 2-0 to 0-5 after 11 minutes.

Aughawillan were dealt a blow in the 12th minute when Fergal McTague was black carded by referee Gareth Foley and their woe was compounded in the 15th minute when Beirne hit the net from close range after beating three visiting defenders in the process.

Despite the goals conceded Aughawillan kept coming back and points were added by Morgan Quinn (3), Stephen Gilheany and Mark Plunkett left them trailing by three at the break.

Aughawillan, through Pearce Dolan, dominated midfield throughout the game and they started the second half brightly but couldn’t translate possession into scores and Mohill punished them in the 34th minute when Keith Beirne scored his second goal after a swift counterattack.

Mohill started to target their kick outs towards Alan McLoughlin in the right-half forward position and he really impacted the  Aughawillan dominance in the midfield sector.

Jordon Reynolds got on the end of a long delivery from Shane Quinn in the 48th minute and he expertly placed the ball into the Aughawillan net to leave eight points between the teams.

Aughawillan continued to rally and hit some excellent points from Barry Prior (2), Christy Prior, Brian Stringer, Morgan Quinn and Fergal McTague but they couldn’t get the vital goals needed to put pressure on the home team as the game entered the final stretch.

The winners responded with good scores from Domhnaill Flynn, Ronan Kennedy, Liam Rowley and the outstanding Beirne to set up a mouthwatering clash with Ballinamore in the quarter-final.

Mohill 1-11 – 1-11 Aughavas

Mohill and Aughavas share the spoils in dramatic encounter

Niall McCabe kicked a late score, to share the spoils in an action filled game in Mohill. Both sides unable to pull away from the other, with Aughavas surging in the second half to come back into the tie.

Neither team could really take it by the scruff of the neck and claim the victory, the second half like a game of ping pong as both teams exchanged scores in a tight encounter.

The elements made for greasy conditions, both guilty of scoring chances that went unanswered, Aughavas will feel the most hard done by following a gutsy second half showing, but McCabe’s late effort was enough for a share of the points in Mohill.

After some early wides Seamus Sweeney kicked the game's opening score before they added a second minutes later for a slender lead. Ciaran Baxter had Mohill within a point after the ninth minute, before a tap over free drew them level in the 12th minute.

Another free had Mohill ahead for the first time in the 14th minute, Aughavas meanwhile were finding life difficult in front of the posts. Sweeney kicked them level at the start of the second quarter, before two Ronan Kennedy points and a great effort by Ciaran Baxter moved them in front 0-6 to 0-3 by the 26th minute.

Kennedy remained focused on the goal, this time firing low to the back of the net to increase the Mohill men’s lead, Sweeney kicked two late points to leave it 1-6 to 0-5 at the break.

Both exchanged scores early in the second half, but it was Aughavas that started brighter, Shane Canning putting one over the blackspot, before Fintan Gallogly scored 1-1 in the space of a minute, for a 1-8 to 1-7 lead ten minutes into the half.

For the remainder of the half, it was a close-knit affair, when one side went ahead the other came back, wides adding up for both on this occasion, Kennedy was a star for Mohill and his 57th minute point looked to be the deciding score, however Niall McCabe with two minutes left of normal time kicked the leveller, in a gripping encounter in damp conditions.

Mohill 0-8 – 3-15 Ballinaglera

Reynolds and Maguire lead Ballinaglera to opening win over Mohill

It was all too easy for Ballinaglera in their opening game of the Smith Monumentals Intermediate championship against Mohill in Pairc Philib Mac Aongusa.

A neat point from Jamie McGreal extended Ballinaglera’s lead to seven in the 24th minute. Mohill full-back Alan Armstrong got up to fire over an excellent point one minute later. Wayne Reynolds (free) and Kennedy (fine effort) traded points as Ballinaglera held a 2-05 to 0-05 at the break.

Ballinaglera didn’t let up with the scoring in the second half. Reynolds kicked over a neat point in the second minute while he set up McGuire for his second goal and his side’s third in the 34th minute.

The lead was 12 points minutes later before McGuire hit the butt of the post with his effort. McGuire and Reynolds continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over with McGuire scoring a superb point in the 48th minute. The lead was extended to 16 entering the final 10 minutes.

Ronan Kennedy got Mohill’s first point of the second half in the 51st minute. Johnny Boyle followed that up with a neat effort. Ballinaglera substitute Aaron McCauley scored an excellent point in the 57th minute.

Mohill sub Ciaran Baxter got their final point of the game in the 59th minute and right before the end McCauley kicked over his second point as his side ran out winners by the wide margin of 16 points.
