Kiltubrid snatch late point in bruising encounter

A late Barry McWeeney free helped Kiltubrid pick up a valuable point in the Intermediate Championship, in what was a toughly fought contest against Drumkeerin.

It was a blistering start to the game with Daniel Maguire capitalised on a lucky break in the opening minutes when surrounded by green and red jersies bearing down on goal, the Drumkeerin attacker lost control of the ball in a solo. He outjumped all of his oppenent's to punch the ball over the oncoming Noel Gill and in off the underside of the bar.

Kiltubrid didn't waste much time getting back on terms as a fantastic through ball found Fionn O'Brien in space and the midfielder finished his lung bursting run to the back of the net despite the best efforts of Kevin Forde in the Drumkeerin net.

The game continued tit for tat with both sides swapping scores but in truth neither side really looked like they wanted to win the game. Some wasteful shooting from Drumkeerin, particularly from dead balls saw them struggle to keep the score board ticking over while Kiltubrid seemed determined to return the ball to their opponents at every opportunity.

Despite the poor showings both sides did manage to raise the white flag five times each in the opening half. No side ever having more than a single point advantage after that goal flurry in the opening minutes.

It was a cagey enough encounter through the early stages of the second period also as Kiltubrid looked to have gained the upper hand and led through . An out of sorts Francie Davitt was replaced by Jason Byrne who's energy lifted the visiting side for the final stages.

A hopeful ball into the Kiltubrid goalmouth was met with force by James Gallagher (Corry) who out jumped his man and fisted the ball past Noel Gill giving the shot stopper no chance from close range to put the north Leitrim side two points up with six minutes left on the clock.

A Barry McWeeney pointed free immediately cut the deficit to a single score before the game was interrupted due to a serious injury sustained by Drumkeerin defender Tommy Rogan.

Thankfully after a few minutes attention he was able to make his own way off the field but his side had four minutes to defend their single point advantage.

Kiltubrid won a last opportunity to tie the scores but Emmet Mahon's effort appeared to go to the left of the goal and wide until referee Eamon Dolan adjudged the defender to have broken the rules and gave a retake to Kiltubrid thirteen metres closer to the goal. This time around Barry McWeeney made no mistake levelling matters with effectively the last kick of the game.

A point keeps both in the Quarter Final shake up but they eagerly await the draw tomorrow afternoon as they will most likely require a positive result in Round 4 to stay in the top six spots in the group table.
