Roundup: D2 Allianz Football League

Galway continued their unbeaten run in Division 2 of the Allianz Football League, with wins also for Offaly and Meath, while Roscommon and Derry shared the spoils.

Offaly 0-15 Down 0-14, Saturday 12th March, 5pm, Newry

Offaly scored four late points to snatch a one-point victory in Newry on Saturday night.

The sides were well matched in the first half. Offaly got the first two scores with Down replying with two of their own before the ten-minute mark. 

Down stretched their lead out to 0-8 to 0-5 on the 22nd minute before Offaly notched three late points going in at half time level 0-8 a piece. 

The second half mimicked the first with the sides matching each other score-for-score. 

Down fired three points in a row between the 56th and 67th minute to lead by that amount. With this late advantage they would have felt fairly confident on getting at least a league point but it wasn’t to be.

A late Offaly resurgence saw them slot four points after the 70th minute mark to snatch the all important points.

Galway 2-8 Clare 1-5, Sunday 13th February, 2pm, Tuam Stadium.

Galway continued their winning run after a comfortable victory over Clare in Tuam Stadium on a scoreline of 2-8 to 1-5.

Clare started the match quickly and after three minutes they found the back of the net Cillian Rouine with the early goal.

Robert Finnerty found the back of the Clare net after 15 minutes Galways last score of the half and the sides went at half time 1-2 to 1-2.

Galway had the conditions aiding them in the second half and soon stretched out their lead scoring 1-5 to no reply the game was soon out of reach for Clare. 

Two late points for Clare put a shine on what was a poor second half for them as Galway proved to be too strong for them as Galway saw out the match 2-8 to 1-5.

Roscommon 0-12 Derry 0-12, Sunday 13th February, 2pm, Dr Hyde Park

Derry’s winning run came to an end at the hands of an inform Roscommon side with both sides sharing the points 0-12 to 0-12.

Derry started the faster getting the first two points of the evening.

The home side got into the game after this scoring the next five points to go 0-5 to 0-2.

The Rossies went in at half time leading 0-7 to 0-4.

The start of the second half again was dominated by the home side scoring the first three points now leading by six Derry had it all to do. 

Derry finally getting to grips of the second half went on a scoring run of their own raising seven white flags of their own, Shane McGuigan getting three from frees.

This left Roscommon needing a late score from Keith Doyle to level up the game late on and the sides level 0-12 to 0-12.

The second half produced 12 cards as both sides tried to gain the upper hand in the league table as we near the important stages of the league in terms of promotion and relegation. 

Meath 1-18 Cork 1-10, Sunday 13th March, 2pm, Pairc Tailteann.

Meath claimed their first win of the campaign as they beat a disappointing Cork side who slide to the bottom of the table after a eight point defeat 1-18 to 1-10

Meath got on the scoreboard first and never fell behind after this. 

Hurley got the rebels level on 0-6 points each after 22 minutes this was as close as they and Meath scored the next five leading at the break 0-11 to 0-6 

Meath pushed on in the second half and Cork never got close to them. The home side outscored the Rebels 1-07 to 1-04 in the second and they finished the evening worthy winners 1-18 to 1-10.
