McEntee steps down as Royal’s boss

Andy McEntee has stepped down as Meath senior football manager following a six-year tenure that ended in Ennis on Saturday after a 1-11 to 1-9 defeat against Clare in the first round of the All-Ireland qualifiers.

The Meath county board released a statement yesterday thanking McEntee and his management team for their work and investment into Meath football during his time in charge.

The Meath board added:

“Andy’s commitment and dedication to the players in particular and to Meath football, in general, has been extraordinary. A high point was the county reaching Division 1 of the league and the “Super 8s” series.”

In addition, McEntee thanked the players and management who were involved during his time.

“I’m stepping down as manager and will not be seeing seeking a third term”, he said.

His reign ends on a very disappointing note after a poor performance against Clare. Speaking to the media after the game, it was unforced errors particularly in the first half that cost his side in the end.

“We just made too many errors. There were a lot of basic errors, handling errors, hand passes given away. I think they got 1-5 out of 1-7 in the first half from turnovers, that cost us in the end.”

In 79 games in charge, the Royals accumulated 37 wins, 5 draws, and 37 losses. He won 10 Championship fixtures, but lost 12.

When asked about his own feelings regarding his position after the game, McEntee replied, insisting “now is not the time to be talking about that.”

The Royals now begin their search for a new manager.
