Farrell delighted with Leitrim Senior Final berth

Joint St Mary’s captain Conor Farrell could not believe they had won their first Leitrim Senior Championship in nine years, as they defeated Mohill by a single point in the decider on Sunday.

Speaking after the game Farrell was delighted his team had gotten over the line, but could not believe they were the 2022 Connacht Gold Leitrim Senior Football Champions.

“Yeah I’m just saying to everyone I meet I still can’t believe we won it like, I think I said the same thing nine years ago, it doesn’t feel like we’ve won it it’ll take a couple days to sink in but yeah it’s unbelievable, yeah unreal.”

Having trailed at the break 1-5 to 0-3, Mary’s needed a comeback in the second half to continue a charge toward the Senior crown, Farrell believes their success all game from the league final, that they felt something was there to be tapped into for this season.

“I think it goes back to the league final, we played Mohill in here and I think we kinda went into that league final just really focused on a performance, we had nothing to lose, we said let’s go in and see how we go, really focused on our performance and how close we ran it, we thought jesus there could be something here, went out a week later and Mohill hockied us across the way there, then obviously the draw we played Ballinamore which were county champions at the time.

So you know our backs were against the walls we had to get a win there, I think once we got the win in Ballinamore you know that kinda set the season rolling, we haven’t looked back since, I think if you look back through the results I think Mohill’s the only team that’s beaten us this year in both league and championship, but yeah it was really just one game at a time just focus on ourselves nobody else and yeah it’s just gathered momentum.”

Mary’s swept aside Mohill in the second half, despite having James McGrail black carded before the hour mark they never squandered their lead, they kept ticking the scoreboard in their favour throughout the half with Farrell amongst their second half scorers, the corner back says they had some words at the interval, but knew they were still in the tie.

“Yeah I think we were well in it until that goal went in, it was a high ball that dropped it was probably a mistake on our part bar the goal we were well in it we were turning them over, you know at half time there was a few things said, you know we fully believed we were still in it if we could just get it back, back to four, back to three, keep chipping away see if we can get close to them with ten minutes to go and see how they react then and that’s what we did and we got over the line and held on so yeah buzzing.”
