Match Report

Brooks stars for Wexford as Leitrim pay the penalty in Parnell Park

Wexford goalkeeper Darragh Brooks was the match winner for his side as they secured their passage to the knockout stages of the Tailteann Cup with a win over Leitrim at Parnell Park.

The Wexford shotstopper produced a phenomenal penalty save from Keith Beirne alongside two other top saves to go with his scoring contribution of 0-4 throughout the seventy minutes as he led his side into the preliminary Quarter Finals.

It took a full six minutes for the opening score and it came from the most unlikeliest of sources. The Wexford full back Paraic Hughes marauded forward and popped it over the bar. Keith Beirne pulled one back almost instantly with a long range free allaying fears of his injury flaring up again.

Leitrim continued to apply the pressure to the Wexford defence and Darragh Rooney was on hand to add a second score after a decent build up from the Connacht county, Beirne and Rooney both again raised the white flag adding a quickfire third to give Leitrim the upper hand in the early exchanges.

Darragh Brooks pulled one back for the Model County to reduce the deficit to a single score just before the 20 minute mark.

In the next move, Letirim forward Rooney almost broke through for a goal but his effort went just over the bar after great work from Conor Reynolds and Tom Prior to combine to set the high flying Rooney through on goal.

Keith Beirne converted a free after a foul on Paul Keaney gave the sharpshooter the opportunity to strike at goal.

In the build up to half time, Wexford almost took the lead through Conor Kinsella at the end of a great team move, but his effort went just wide to save Leitrim’s blushes. Moments later Tom Prior almost did the exact same at the other end but a fabulous save from Wexford’s main man Darragh Brooks deflected the ball over the bar.

Prior repeated his efforts moments later, but again was unable to convert his chance ultimately with Keith Beirne seeing his effort from the rebound going just wide.

Brooks continued his fine form with another outstanding save from Paul Keaney as they broke down the field and added the lead score through Mark Rossiter.

Niall Hughes and Jack Heslin traded scores before Leitrim finally found the net. Good combination between Keith Beirne and Darragh Rooney saw the former Melvin Gaels man drive the ball past Brooks to put his side two points ahead on 45 minutes.

Glen Malone managed to half the deficit with a burst from centre back resulting in a point but disaster almost struck for Wexford just moments later when Donal Wyrnn was fouled at the end of a long run into the box.

Brooks produced another important moment when he got down well to keep out Keith Beirne’s penalty and keep his side in the game yet again with twenty minutes to go.

Wexford built on that foundation to hit four scores to Leitrim’s single strike over the next ten minutes with Ben Brosnan, Paraic Hughes, Glen Malone and Liam Coleman raising the white flag with Jack Heslin the sole strike for Leitrim during that purple patch for the Model county.

Brooks, Eoghan Nolan and Brian Molloy repeated the feat for Wexford against Keith Beirnes solo strike in the closing ten minutes of the game but it was Ben Brosnan who found the net two minutes into injury time for Wexford who killed the game off in the end.

Consolations scores for Keith Beirne and Darragh Rooney after Wexford midfielder Niall Hughes got his black card marching orders put a gloss on the score line but Wexford progress to the knock out stages as Leitrim must go back to the drawing board.
