Carlow Keep Tailteann Ambitions Alive Over New York
There was no fairy-tale for New York as Carlow overturned a two point half-time deficit to defeat the Exiles by five points at Netwatch Cullen Park.
Carlow put in a better performance after the break and when they took the lead in the 45th minute through Jordan Morrissey they didn’t relinquish it this time. New York battled until the end with Carlow keeper Johnny Furey pulling off a fine save to deny Mark Ellis in the 57th minute. Right before the full-time whistle Luke Kelly hit the post with his strike.
Both sides were extremely defensive in the opening half. At times there were 15 players in either half. It was a tight half. Darragh Foley opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a free but Shane Brosnan drew New York level one minute later. The sides level once more before New York took the lead for the first time in the 14th minute with a point from Daniel O’Sullivan.
Gavin O’Brien kicked over an excellent point in the 17th minute. Colm Hulton scored a much needed point for Carlow in the 20th minute but despite cutting the gap to one they couldn’t get the equalising point.
Foley kicked over his fourth point in the 35th minute when he fired over a free but just before the break a point from Jack Reilly saw New York go in at the break ahead by two - 0-8 to 0-6.
Points from Foley (free) and Ciaran Moran drew Carlow level in the 38th minute. Shane Carthy replied with a free for New York three minutes later. Morrissey hit over a superb point to put Carlow in front again in the 45th minute.
Another free from the boot of Foley put two between the sides in the 47th minute. It was five in the 51st minute when Foley kicked over his seventh point (sixth free). Down the other end Carlow netminder Furey kept his goal intact with a good save from Ellis.
Seanie Bambrick fired over a good point in the 62nd minute. New York hit over the last score of the game; Killian Butler with a point in stoppage time.
