Connacht SFC: Roscommon earn Final berth
Roscommon ensured the Connacht Championship final will be a repeat of the division two league final, beating Sligo 0-23 to 0-11 this evening in Markievicz Park.
The home side went down to 14 men just 15 minutes in when David Philips was red carded for an off the ball incident with free taking master Conor Cox, but the scoreline remained in touching distance at halftime at 0-5 to 0-9 in The Rossies’ favour.
Mark Walsh was a late change in for David Quinn to make his first championship start, the same story was the case for Tourlestrane midfielder Conan Marren who helped his team win the first throw in.
Paddy O’Connor tipped over the first score of the day off of that, while Cox had a melee then and went on to accumulate five points before halftime.
Otherwise Paul Kilcoyne, Mikey Gordan and Davy Murray all picked up yellow cards, while Niall Murphy, Walsh, Darragh Cummins and Sean Carrabine clocked scores for Sligo and Eddie Nolan, Cathal Heneghan, Ciaran Murtagh and Enda Smith supplemented Cox’s tally to round off the opening half.
After the pause Smith really came to life as Sligo struggled to regain the kick they had experienced at the latter stages of the first half.
Ciaran Murtagh and Donie Smith were also on target for Roscommon, as Anthony Cunningham
exercised good game management too substituting booked Murray off for Conor Daly who joined his two brothers on the field.
Darragh Cummins picked up both a score and a yellow card as the subs began to roll in and out in an effort to change the game for the men in black and white. In that regard David Quinn, Pat Spillane, Conor Griffin, Peter Laffey and Pat Hughes all came on for a showcase, as did Keith Doyle, Niall Kilroy, Diarmuid Murtagh and Andrew Glennon for the opposition.
Kilroy and Murtagh in particular made a big impact, infront of the 6,059 in attendance in Sligo.
Cavan’s Noel Mooney blew the game up after three minutes added time to wrap up a 12 point win for Roscommon that sees them through to the final now against Galway.

Today’s encounter though is to be overseen by referee Noel Mooney and will go to time if necessary. It hasn’t been selected for live TV coverage and isn’t available to be streamed, although live updates will be available here on Finalwhistle.ie throughout.
The team in black and white will aspire to build on the recent successes of their U20 outfit who triumphed for their first ever Connacht title at that age group recently and now prepare for the All Ireland series where they are to take on Kildare.
The game today had been originally scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, but was reallocated to this evening after discussions with An Garda Siochána and the Connacht Council deemed it best to move the occasion to avoid traffic congestion with the Sligo Races.
Sligo meanwhile travelled overseas as of late to play New York on their home turf, eventually holding out to secure a 1-16 to 0-15 win. There Niall Murphy and Seán Carrabine shone in particular for the Yeats' County men, and will no doubt be looking to do the same today.
Today’s visitors however are favourites as they have before tasted victory against Galway, with Anthony Cunningham’s side having pipped them to the Division Two League Final thanks to a Diarmuid Murtagh goal.
In that big name clash Mayo mounted a late resurgence to clock 0-5 without reply but it wasn’t enough for James Horan’s men, Johnny Heaney and Shane Walsh having painted themselves in glory for the opposition.
After Galway narrowly overcame Mayo last weekend on a score-line of 1-14 to 0-16 at McHale Park both sides will have eyes on the clash with the Tribesmen.
