Dublin draw with Rossies in Croker
Dublin and Roscommon played out a thrilling 14-point draw this afternoon in a sunny Croke Park.
Dublin finished with 1-11 points to their name against a stubborn Roscommon side that fired 0-14 over the bar in their opening game of Group 3 of the All-Ireland series.
The Rossies came out of the blocks sharp and were only too happy to show the Dubs that this game would be no walkover. Ciaran Lennon’s quick double put the visitors up by two points in the opening four minutes, before Cormac Costello pulled one back for Dublin.
Diarmuid Murtagh scored his first point of the day making it 0-3 to 0-1 for the away side. Con O’Callaghan popped one over the bar for the Dubs in the ninth minute.
A black card for Dublin’s Mick Fitzsimmons gave the initiative to Roscommon and they scored three unanswered points in a row through a couple of frees sent over by Diarmuid Murtagh and Ciaran Murtagh, while Enda Smith got on the score sheet too.
Dublin fired back with Costello and O’Callaghan making it 0-4 to 0-6 around the 25-minute mark. Diarmuid Murtagh and Ciaran Murtagh put some more daylight between the sides as the Dubs were looking to get back into the game.
Costello scored his third of the match as half-time was approaching before Ciaran Murtagh made it 0-5 to 0-9 at the break in favour of Roscommon.
The Boys in the Blue started the second half strong with Sean Bugler pushing forward and popping one over the bar.
Niall Daly answered back for Roscommon before the only goal of the game was bundled over the line by John Small to turn the game on its head. The scoreline was now 1-6 to 0-10 and the home side were now in the ascendency.
Cormac Costello evened things up with another free-kick before he sent a solid point over the bar from open play a few minutes later.
Ciaran Murtagh scored his fourth of the game and levelled it up around the hour mark settling Roscommon’s nerves.
Costello scored his sixth minutes later before Ciaran Murtagh made it 12 points apiece. Heading towards the 70-minute mark points from Costello and Sean Bugler put Dublin two points ahead.
Substitute Conor Cox pulled one back for the Rossies in injury time before Donie Smith evened things up at the death.
